La de Giovanni Jervis: Quien en ocasiones se despierta de mal humor, bajo de moral, y poco predispuesto a afrontar las dificultades de la jornada puede que diga hoy me siento…deprimido , aunque afortunadamente no lo esté. La depresión es un trastorno específico, si bien bastante común, que afecta más a fondo y más a largo plazo a la persona. Es uno de los posibles deslizamientos patológicos de nuestra mente; a veces leve, amagada y sólo aparentemente remisible, a veces grave y ?si no es tratada adecuadamente? también mortal. Por consiguiente puede y debe ser curada. Este libro se detiene en los conocimientos más consolidados en la materia (orígenes, variantes clínicas, datos estadísticos) y en las terapias más actuales y eficaces (psicofármacos y psicoterapias). Los numerosos casos clínicos expuestos en el libro dan una idea de las vivencias de quien padece esta enfermedad. . Giovanni Jervis enseña Psicología Dinámica en la Universidad La Sapienza de Roma. Es autor, entre otras obras, de Manual crítico de psiquiatría (Anagrama, 1977) y en esta misma colección de Psiquiatría y sociedad (núm. 121). . . . Y la de José Luis González: La depresión, lejos de constituir únicamente el pesar de un alma enferma como nos quiere hacer ver la psiquiatría oficial, posee una forma poliédrica con, al menos, cuatro dimensiones cuyo análisis es necesario para su comprensión, a saber: existencial, clínica, ideológica y económica. La dimensión existencial hace referencia al quebranto anímico del individuo deprimido y de su entorno inmediato; la clínica trata de dilucidar en qué consiste el trastorno, cuáles son sus causas y cuáles sus tratamientos más eficaces; la ideológica intenta desenmascarar los motivos ocultos tras las causas, diagnósticos y tratamientos citados; mientras que la dimensión económica se refiere a los intereses últimos que están detrás de uno de los trastornos más incapacitantes de las sociedades desarrolladas. La mayor parte de la bibliografía existente sobre el tema se ha ocupado de las dos primeras dimensiones olvidando ?u ocultando? los procesos ideológicos y los intereses financieros asociados a la depresión. El presente texto intenta dar una visión de conjunto mostrando que los modelos sobre las causas y tratamientos de la depresión, lejos de ser neutrales y derivar sus formulaciones teóricas del ámbito estrictamente científico, forman un complejo entramado donde se entrecruzan intereses económicos, profesionales e ideológicos, así como distintas concepciones sobre la naturaleza humana, que no siempre convergen en beneficio de quien sufre dicho quebranto afectivo. .
