Bound in half brown leather with marbled boards and gilt titles to spine, this 1845 hardcover Volume One of The illuminated Magazine is close VG. 348pp with illuminated title page, Preface, 102 articles and stories, illustrated with engravings by Phiz, Leech and Sargeant… among others. Worth a mention is the article "The Last Stage Coachman". This is the first appearance of this item, in which Collins laments the disappearance of the Stage coach and its replacement by the railway. He imagines a meeting with "the last Coachman", who reminises about the demise of the Coaching Inn and the end of a way of life; all at the behest of the souless railway. Light foxin to prelims, and rubbing to board edges. Page 101 has a horizontal tear: this is a closed tear with nothing missing. Page 183 has a creased and chipped fore-edge. Otherwise VG.
