Séptima edición del tratado de cosmografía más famoso de su época. La obra está escrita en forma de libro de enseñanza, explicando cada punto a modo de definiciones; se exponen y enseñan todos los conocimientos astronómicos, astrológicos, matemáticos, y en general todo el saber científico de su tiempo. El libro fue impreso por vez primera en Sevilla en 1548 siendo tal el éxito que, en espacio de cuarenta años se reeditó en más de diez ocasiones. Esta edición tiene especial interés por haber sido realizada por su padre, Alonso de Chaves, haciendo las correcciones que se anuncian. Dividida en cuatro partes, la primera trata del tiempo, de sus divisiones y de los medios de apreciarle; la segunda parte habla de los cielos, de los elementos y de los planetas, con 12 grabados para los signos del zodiaco, y 3 que representan el sistema astronómico elemental y la tierra. La tercera parte comprende el lunario y las fiestas móviles desde 1554 hasta 1600, la explicación de los eclipses con 2 láminas generales y 46 pequeños grabados que representan las fases de todos los eclipses visibles en Sevilla hasta 1602. La cuarta parte es un tratado de astrología, pronósticos, influencias planetarias, etc. Tiene una lámina que figura un hombre desnudo en el cual se marcan las venas en que conviene hacer las sangrías. Concluye el libro con una tabla de las longitudes de 260 ciudades de Europa y América, arregladas al meridiano de Sevilla. "Chaves fue un buen matemático, un entendido cosmógrafo y un hábil geógrafo, cuyos mapas se reprodujeron por espacio de mucho tiempo en las mejores colecciones. Publicó el Tratado de la Esfera a los veintidós años, demostrando una serie de conocimientos científicos muy superiores a lo que correspondía a esta edad, y su Cronografía, aunque no tiene nada nuevo en la teórica, contiene útiles tablas corregidas de los errores en que muchos incurrían y arregladas al meridiano de Sevilla. hizo esta edición y las correcciones que en ella se anuncian su padre Alonso de Chaves" (Picatoste). The work is written in the form of a teaching book, explaining each point by way of definitions; all the astronomical, astrological, mathematical knowledge and in general all the scientific knowledge of its time are exposed and taught. The book was printed for the first time in Seville in 1548; the success being such that, in the space of forty years, it was reissued more than ten times. This edition is of special interest because it was editd by his father, Alonso de Chaves, making the corrections that are announced. Divided into four parts, the first deals with time, its divisions and the means of appreciating it; the second part talks about the heavens, the elements and the planets, with 12 engravings for the signs of the zodiac, and 3 that represent the elemental astronomical system and the earth. The third part includes the lunary and the mobile parties from 1554 to 1600, the explanation of the eclipses with 2 general plates and 46 small engravings that represent the phases of all the eclipses visible in Seville until 1602. The fourth part is a treatise on astrology, forecasts, planetary influences, etc. It has a picture that shows a naked man in which the veins are marked. The book concludes with a table of the longitudes of 260 cities in Europe and America, arrange to the meridian of Seville. "Chaves was a good mathematician, a pretigious cosmographer, and a skilled geographer, whose maps were reproduced for long time in the best collections. He published a treatise on the Sphere at the age of twenty-two, demonstrating a series of scientific knowledge far superior to what corresponded to this age. His Chronography, although it has nothing new in theory, contains useful corrected tables of the errors in which many incurred, fixed to the meridian of Seville. he made this edition and the corrections that his father Alonso de Chaves announced in it" (Picatoste).
