Herz, on the front pastedown, his sale "Important Voyages and Travels", Christie's 9th December 2009, lot 222 "ONE OF THE MOST AUTHORITATIVE AND COMPREHENSIVE ATLASES OF AMERICA." (Walter Ristow) First edition, most maps are dated 1775, and some dated 1774. A very important atlas with large maps of 11 of the 13 colonies and of French Canada, of the Revolutionary War era. Jefferys was geographer to the Prince of Wales, later King George III, and the leading map supplier of his day. His "American Atlas" is the most important 18th-century atlas for America, described by Walter Ristow as a "geographical description of the whole continent of America, as portrayed in the best available maps in the latter half of the eighteenth century. as a major cartographic reference work it was, very likely, consulted by American, English, and French civilian administrators and military officers during the Revolution." The atlas contains a number of important maps, including Braddock Mead's "A Map of the Most Inhabited Parts of New England," the largest and most detailed map of New England yet published, and Samuel Holland's "The Provinces of New York and New Jersey." Holland was surveyor for the northern American colonies. Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson's "A Map of the Most Inhabited part of Virginia" is the best colonial map of the Chesapeake region. Lieut. Ross's "Course of the Mississipi" is the first map of that river based on English sources. THE FIRST EDITION IS VERY RARE: with just two copies (including the present when it was sold at Christie's New York in 1983) appearing in American Book Prices Current in the last thirty years. Quarto. (9 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches). [vi], xxiv, 106 [2] index p., 32 engraved folding maps (one hand-coloured in outline). Uncut. Original gray paper boards with cloth clamshell box. First edition of a noted mid-18th century English work on Spanish America, illustrated with important 32 maps of the region, including the often lacking 'Isthmus of Panama'. This work was published just following the end of the French and Indian War when England's attention was especially turned towards Spain's colonies in America. The work contains a long Introduction, and special accounts of each of the Colonies, Districts, and important cities. Among the most interesting of the contents are the accounts of Florida, Pensacola, and St. Augustine de la Florida. The charts are based on drawings captured from the Spaniards in the recently-ended war, concentrating on ports and seaboards likely to be of the greatest interest to opportunistic British merchants. Includes the following maps and plans: La Guaira, Puerto Cavello, Santa Martha, Cartagena, Zisapata Bay, Porto Bello, Chagre, Panama, Vera Cruz, Pensacola, St. Augustin, Cuba, Havana, various harbours in Cuba, St Domingo, and Porto Rico, among others. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. 2 parts in one volume, folio (14 x 9 inches): title-pages printed in red and black (some browning), 18 fine engraved folding maps and plans by and after Jefferys and others (some heavy staining). Contemporary calf (fire damaged and rebacked to style). FIRST EDITION. "A monumental geographical work important equally for its text as well as its maps. This excellent copy contains the seldom-found seven inserted leaves which contain "The French attempt to retake Quebec in 1760." Also on page 80 of Part II is found a pasted on slip containing the parish names of both Guadeloupe and Grande Terre" (Streeter). One of the most important 18th-century cartographers of North America, and Geographer to the Prince of Wales, Jefferys in part one describes Canada and Louisiana, after the Jesuit accounts of Labat, Charlevoix and others. He includes detailed plans of Quebec, Montreal, New Orleans and the Siege of Quebec. In part II Jefferys describes the West Indies and South America, with maps of Quadaloupe, Grenada and "Martinico." Thomas Jefferys published some of "the most important eighteenth-century maps of the Americas, a series given cohesion and impetus by the preliminary hostilities and eventual outbreak of the Seven Years' War. Among many individual works of note were Joshua Fry's and Peter Jefferson's 1751 survey of Virginia, engraved and published by Jefferys in 1753, and Joseph Blanchard's and Samuel Langdon's New Hampshire (1761), the first published map of the state. The culmination of this concentration of work was the atlas published in association with Robert Sayer as A General Topography of North America in 1768. Posthumous collections were published by Sayer in 1775 as The American Atlas, The North-American Pilot, including important charts by James Cook, and The West-India Atlas, for which a collection of working drafts survives in the British Library" (DNB). Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo., (8 2/8 x 5 inches). Late 19th-century half black morocco, gilt (extremities a bit worn, front free endpaper detached). First Edition. This seemingly slight work, published the year before commencement of the French and Indian War, in fact lays the ground for British claims to disputed territory in North America. On pages 51-52 Jefferys points out the French cartographers's 'geographical slight of hand': Delisle, Danville, Bellin, and others for extending French boundaries in America with the successive editions of their maps, and so revealing French aims of expansion in all of North America, not only Nova Scotia (called "Arcadia"), but also Carolina, and beyond, even Francis Drake Bay had been renamed San Francisco. Jefferys published his own map of Nova Scotia in the midst of the French and Indian War in 1755. Engraved map, uncoloured, with compass rose, scale of one mile, latitude and longitude borders. An earliest dedicated chart of Bequia, surveyed in the year the Grenadines passed into British possession, and one of the most detailed eighteenth century printed maps of the island. This finely engraved map was surveyed in 1763, the year of the Treaty of Paris, when Saint Vincent and the Grenadines entered British control after a long period of French and British competition in the Lesser Antilles. Britannica notes that Britain was granted control of Saint Vincent in 1763, with the Grenadines later administered in relation to Saint Vincent; the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority records that French settlement on Bequia preceded British possession and included indigo, lime, cotton and sugar production. The map is especially rich in coastal detail naming Admiralty or North Bay, now Port Elizabeths great natural harbour, together with South East Bay, Grande Ance, Ance Fauvelles, Ance Hyby, Ance Babie, Ance Caribe, Ance Chemin, Bay Salabin, Pointe Brulée, Pointe au Diable, North East Point, and West Point. The mixture of French and English toponyms gives the sheet particular historical interest, reflecting Bequias recent transition from French to British control while retaining the older French naming of bays, points, and anchorages. A road or track is shown crossing the island from the northern coast toward the interior and the harbour, while hachured hills, dotted ground, and carefully worked coastal lines give a compact but detailed impression of the islands terrain. As a small island map, this has a strong appeal beyond the usual general maps of the Caribbean. It is not merely a regional outline, but a close survey of Bequia itself, showing its harbours, roads, relief, and named coastal features at a scale suitable for administrative and navigational use. The University of the West Indies describes this map as the earliest engraved chart of the island, underscoring the importance of the plate for the printed cartography of Bequia. A desirable early impression of one of the few eighteenth century printed maps devoted entirely to Bequia. Thomas Jefferys was one of the leading English cartographers of the 18th century. From about 1750, he published a series of maps of the Americas, that were among the most significant produced in the period. As Geographer to the Prince of Wales, and after 1761, Geographer to the King, Jefferys was well-placed to have access to the best surveys conducted, and many of his maps held the status of "official work." Jefferys died on 20th November 1771, but Robert Sayer (in partnership with John Bennett) 'having acquired the sole property of the Plates' and other material relating to the work, 'minutely followed' Jefferys' plans for The West India Atlas although Sayer does note that additional work was done using various sources to ensure that the information was up to date. Copper-engraved map on laid paper, uncoloured. A detailed eighteenth-century chart of the Texas Gulf Coast from Jeffreys' West India Atlas, showing its bays, rivers, and coastal settlements, together with navigational information and contemporary geographical knowledge of the region. An important early chart of the Texas Gulf Coast by Thomas Jefferys, depicting the coastline from the vicinity of the Sabine River southwestward towards the Rio Grande and northeastern Mexico. The map records the intricate system of bays, lagoons, rivers, and barrier islands along the northern Gulf of Mexico, including Galveston Bay and Matagorda Bay. Numerous soundings and intersecting rhumb lines provide navigational information, while the interior is marked with rivers, Indigenous territories, and settlements identified by French and Spanish names. An inscription describes the country as covered with woods and inhabited by wild cattle, deer, and other animals, reflecting European geographical knowledge of the area during the eighteenth century. Of particular historical interest is the identification of the site associated with René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, whose ill-fated expedition established a French settlement on the Texas coast in 1685. La Salle's expedition, originally intended to establish a colony near the mouth of the Mississippi, instead landed on the Texas coast and founded Fort Saint Louis near Matagorda Bay. The settlement's failure and the subsequent Spanish expeditions sent to investigate the French presence contributed to Spain's renewed efforts to secure its northern frontier. The map preserves geographical information derived from this period of French and Spanish exploration, illustrating the gradual development of European cartographic knowledge of the region. The present chart was published during a period of significant territorial change in North America following the Seven Years' War, when France ceded Louisiana west of the Mississippi to Spain and Britain acquired Spanish Florida. Its detailed treatment of the Texas coastline, together with its record of colonial settlements and Indigenous geography, provides a valuable representation of the northern Gulf Coast before the extensive surveys and political transformations of the nineteenth century. Copper-engraved map on laid paper, uncoloured. An extensive eighteenth-century nautical chart of the Atlantic Ocean from the West-India Atlas, illustrating the principal maritime routes connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas during the height of British Atlantic commerce. This detailed chart encompasses the Atlantic Ocean from Greenland and northern Europe to the southern coast of South America and the western coast of Africa. The coastlines of North and South America, the British Isles, western Europe, and Africa are carefully delineated, together with the principal islands and archipelagos of the Atlantic, including the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Bermuda, and the West Indies. Numerous coastal settlements, harbours, capes, and navigational landmarks are identified. A network of rhumb lines radiates from compass points across the ocean, providing a framework for plotting courses between the continents. The chart reflects the importance of the Atlantic as the principal maritime corridor connecting Britain's American colonies with Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. By the middle of the eighteenth century, these waters supported an extensive network of commercial shipping, naval operations, and colonial expansion, including the trade in enslaved Africans. Accurate knowledge of coastlines, island positions, and transatlantic routes was essential to merchants and naval commanders alike. The chart's combination of geographical detail and navigational features reflects the practical requirements of this expanding maritime world. Following his death in 1771, Robert Sayer acquired Jefferys' plates and cartographic materials and, in partnership with John Bennett, continued the publication of his work. The present chart was included in The West-India Atlas, published by Sayer and Bennett in 1775. The atlas brought together detailed charts of the Atlantic approaches, the Caribbean islands, and the neighbouring American coastlines, providing a comprehensive geographical and navigational survey of the region. Published at the outset of the American Revolutionary War, the atlas appeared at a moment when accurate maritime intelligence was of particular importance to British naval and commercial interests. Copper-engraved map on laid paper, uncoloured, large compass rose with radiating rhumb lines, coastal soundings, navigational annotations, and scales of latitude and longitude. An important eighteenth-century navigational chart of the northern Gulf of Mexico, published shortly before the American Revolution, depicting the coasts of Louisiana and British West Florida with detailed hydrographic information. The chart extends along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, encompassing the Mississippi Delta, the Louisiana coastline, Mobile Bay, Pensacola, and the western coast of Florida. Rivers, bays, islands, coastal settlements, and navigational hazards are carefully delineated, while numerous soundings and annotations provide practical information for vessels navigating the Gulf. A prominent compass rose dominates the open water, its extensive network of rhumb lines extending across the chart. The chart also records navigational routes and observations concerning the prevailing winds and currents, reflecting the importance of the Gulf to maritime commerce between the Caribbean, the Mississippi Valley, and the Atlantic world. The map documents a period of considerable territorial change following the Seven Years' War. Under the Treaty of Paris of 1763, Britain acquired Florida from Spain and established the colonies of East and West Florida. The western colony initially extended from the Apalachicola River to the Mississippi River, encompassing the important ports of Pensacola and Mobile. Meanwhile, France had ceded Louisiana west of the Mississippi, together with New Orleans, to Spain. The chart thus represents a strategically important coastline divided between British and Spanish possessions, where maritime navigation, colonial trade, and imperial administration were closely connected. The present chart appeared in 1775 in The West-India Atlas, an important collection of nautical charts intended to provide accurate geographical and hydrographic information for navigation throughout the Caribbean and adjoining American coasts. It forms the western portion of a larger two-sheet representation of the Gulf Coast and Florida, accompanied by The Peninsula and Gulf of Florida or Channel of Bahama with the Bahama Islands. Together, the sheets provided an extensive navigational survey of the Gulf of Mexico and the approaches to the Florida Straits, a maritime corridor of considerable commercial and military importance during the late colonial period. From about 1750, he published a series of maps of the Americas, that were among the most significant produced in the period.
