La carrière d'Armand Guibert l'amena à venir professer à Tunis où, très vite, il va développer une riche activité littéraire en tant qu'auteur, éditeur et traducteur. Sa rencontre avec Jean Amrouche sera décisive et il reprend avec lui la revue Mirages en 1932 et crée les éditions du même nom. En 1934 il fonde, toujours à Tunis, la collection des Cahiers de Barbarie.Publiée en pleine guerre civile espagnole, Suite Espagnole, premier livre de Jean Bercher, se présente comme un guide pour visiter l'Espagne. Le texte est précédé d'une intéressante préface de l'éditeur.Parlant de l'auteur : « L'aisance de ses propos n'est pas sans rappeler William Beckford, seigneur de Fonthill, qui parcourait avant lui les terres ibériques; on aime chez les deux voyageurs que le culte de l'art soit vivifié par le respect de la sensation, informé qu'il est le plus souvent par une présence ».Jean Bercher donne plusieurs contributions et critiques littéraires aux deux revues d'Armand Guibert : Los curanderos, Adamastor par Roy Campbell, Complaintes gitanes de Federico Garcia Lorca, Poètes Maltais. De 1939 à 1941, Guibert anima la page littéraire de La Tunisie française littéraire, dans laquelle publieront Pierre Emmanuel, Henri Bosco, Albert Camus et Jules Roy avec lequel il se liera d'amitié. Il rejoint Albert Camus à Alger et intègre les éditions de Pierre Seghers, d'abord en tant que membre du comité de rédaction de la petite collection Poésie 39, 40, 41, 42, et plus tard en collaborant à la collection Poètes d'aujourd'hui, par deux volumes consacrés à Léopold Sédar Senghor et Fernando Pessoa qu'il avait découvert lors d'un séjour au Portugal (1942-1943) et dont on peut considérer qu'il est l'introducteur en France.État neuf. …
