Washington Allston (1779 â" 1843) was an American painter and poet, born in Waccamaw Parish, South Carolina. Allston was a pioneer of the American Romantic movement in landscape painting. He was well known for his dramatic subject matter and bold use of light and colour. After graduating from Harvard College in 1800, Allston moved to Charleston, South Carolina for awhile. In 1801 he sailed to England where he was admitted to the Royal Academy in London. After the death of his wife, Allston returned to the United States in 1818 and lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the next twenty-five years.
