Upper cover slightly bowed and slightly rubbed at upper inner corner, neat ink initials at foot of title page (JS), a small number to top outer corner, faint orange and dusty stain to upper part of blank side of title page, faint discoloration on woodcut illustration, faint pink stain to 3 outer margins, not affecting text, old front endpaper stained at edges, small old ink stain to margin of H2, pale damp stain to lower blank corners almost throughout, leaving tidemarks from G-H4v, a larger one on text from T-Hh4, all easily legible (see attached images), tiny chip to fore-edge margin of Cc2, 1 small pointing hand, occasional very light browning. A good first edition copy of this manual of alchemy. Janus Lacinius is thought to be a pseudonym for Giovanni da Crotone, a Franciscan Friar from Calabria. Il contient le "pretiosa margarita novella" de Petrus Bonus (1330) déjà publié par Alde en 1546, dans un recueil portant un titre similaire au nôtre mais dont le contenu est très différent. On trouve aussi des textes d'Arnaud de Villeneuve, de Lulle, Rhasès, Albert le Grand et Michel Scot. Le texte a été divisé en cinq chapitres correspondant à des étapes de procédés alchimiques. Lacinius's Pretiosa margarita novella de thesauro, ac pretiosissimo philosophorum lapide (taken from the fourteenth-century manuscript of Petrus Bonus) had previously been published by the Aldine press in Venice in 1546, and although this collection has a similar title, the contents are somewhat different. Übersetzung, 6S.). - Petrus Bonus führt in diesem Werk u.a. etliche Gründe an, die gegen die Alchemie sprechen, um in jew. darauf folgenden Kapiteln das Gegenteil zu beweisen. Auch geht er auf die Schwierigkeiten bei der Alchemie ein u. gleich zu Anfang enthält der Text nach symbolischen Abb. von Bäumen eine allegorische Bildfolge zur Transmutation (Ein König wird durch seinen Sohn ermordet, begraben u. später aus seinen Knochen wieder zum Leben erweckt.
