Añadir al carritoMap. Condición: Good. [Descripción en español a continuación] Original map of Paraguay, the Río de la Plata and the surrounding region. In the centre stand out the courses of the Río de la Plata, the Paraguay River and the Paraná River, while on the left the Andes mountain range (represented pictorially) and Lake Titicaca dominate. It identifies important cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Santiago, Mendoza, Potosí and Cusco. The Tropic of Capricorn divides the map longitudinally and it contains some of the most characteristic elements of the Dutch golden age of cartography, such as a ship, a sea monster and a compass rose crowned by a fleur-de-lis. Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) was a prominent Dutch publisher and geographer. He studied with the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and established a shop of globes, maps and astronomical instruments in Amsterdam. In 1635 he published his atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive, Atlas novus. Three years later, Blaeu died and bequeathed his publishing firm to his sons Cornelius and Johannes, with whom it continued to prosper. The latter was responsible for the Atlas Major that was published in two volumes in 1662 and contained six hundred maps. This work was not as accurate and up to date as its author would have liked, but this deficiency was surpassed by the fine engraving and the colour, to the point of being considered one of the best of its kind. In 1672 a fire destroyed Blaeu's printing house and a year later he died. The plates and maps that survived the fire were dispersed, passing into the hands of F. de Wit, Schenk and Valck. -------------------- 1630.

Añadir al carritoCondición: See R A Skelton p.224. Engraved map in original outline hand colour. 15 x 20 inches. Dutch text on verso. A crisp impression with excellent margins. A fine example. This impression comes from the Dutch text appendix published by Jansson in 1644, in which he published eleven English county maps, derived from Speed's maps. However, the plates are in an unfinished state [state I] and were to be extensively re-engraved and augmented before being published in the more commonly seen Novus Atlas in 1646. These rare impressions differ in the decoration of the cartouche, which is without its familiar embellishments. These were to appear on the later issues and differ in several other features. They only appeared in this state once and the impression was probably not large. Rare. KENT MAPS KENT.…

Originally a two-page print from Janssonius' Nievwen Atlas. Vol. III., the plates were latter purchased first by Peter Schenk and Gerard Valk, then by John and Henry Overton. [Descripción en español a continuación] Coloured map of the central coast of Chile, published in Amsterdam in 1640 by Joannes Jansson (1588-1664), a Dutch cartographer and rival of the Blaeu family, who expanded the Mercator-Hondius Atlas and published his own Atlas Novus and Atlas Maior. The coast runs from south (right) to north (left), with localities such as Castro, on Chiloé Island, Valdivia, Arauco, Concepción and 'Mapocho' (Santiago de Chile). The relief shows the Andes range richly illustrated and several rivers, with two volcanoes off Villarrica. The title and scale occupy the upper corners, with a coloured cartouche. On the reverse, a French text describes Chile, its provinces and towns.
