Ce récit simple et direct, mais dont l'auteur ne se prive pas, à l'occasion, de réfléchir sur les événements qu'elle traverse, nous plonge allègrement dans les péripéties inattendues de la croisière transatlantique - immigrants clandestins, violentes tempêtes qui provoquent un manque de vivres, passage du Tropique, etc. -, nous fait toucher la réalité de la vie ordinaire des esclaves aussi bien que de celle des colons à l'apogée du développement du commerce sucrier, comme elle nous jette sans ménagement parmi la société troublée des colonies américaines de la Couronne britannique, au moment précis où se manifestent les premiers soubresauts d'une révolte qui conduira, quelques années plus tard, à leur indépendance. Grâce à la personnalité exceptionnelle de son auteur, qui sait à la fois voir et faire voir, ce Journal d'une personne de qualité, retrouvé par hasard en 1904 et publié en 1921 aux Etats-Unis, entraîne le lecteur dans un voyage et un récit d'un intérêt constant (aussi bien du point de vue historique que littéraire), remplis d'aventures variées, mais aussi riches d'enseignements.
