Illustrated with an inserted color frontispiece depicting stage setting designed by John Wenger. Presentation copy to "Polly" with inscription by Dransfield signed "Jane" on front free endpaper and dated 1939. Spine gilt tarnished, cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, else a very good copy. Four-page illustrated leaflet advertising Dransfield's lecture series on American drama, folded and laid in. #672. $25. This play, first performed in 1910, is set in ancient Corinth and recounts the romance and subsequent marriage of Merope, one of Atlas' seven daughters. Her marriage results in her banishment from all heavenly function: hence she becomes the "lost pleiad." It became "one of the most widely performed verse plays." -- A. H.
