Contains five letter and a reproduction of a rare early broadside honoring James W. Marshall, and one of a fold-out map of the gold fields based on surveys made by John Bidwell and first published in 1848. In original white protective dust jacket which is torn along edges. Laid-in is the original advertisement for the volume.

Plain dustjacket not present. Typeset from the then-only known copy of the 1856 edition (which belonged to Ed Grabhorn). The play is preceded by Jane Grabhorn's essay, "A Short Acount of the San Francisco Stage Before 1860." One of 550 copies printed on English mould-made paper. With the bookplate of James Strohn Copley (1916-1973) (his sale, Sotheby's, June 17, 2010, lot 235). Copley was a journalist, newspaperman, and publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune. A near fine copy; touch of rubbing to lower front tip, light offsetting from the pastedowns to facing blanks. Heller & Magee 212.
