Arraché à la conservation oisive des bibliothèques et mis au grand jour par Janus Gruterus » Rare répertoire d'études littéraires et philologiques de divers humanistes des XVe et XVIe siècles, publiés en sept volumes entre 1602 et 1634 par le polygraphe calviniste Jan Gruter, nom latinisé Janus Gruterus, le septième volume fut publié en 1634, après la mort de l'auteur, fut également ajouté un septième volume contenant diverses observations (dont certaines sur l'uvre de Plaute. Compilation de l'érudit Greuter dans laquelle se trouvent un grand nombre de commentateurs et de critiques devenus rares ou restés inédits jusqu'alors. La dernière partie du dernier volume, avec une page de titre indépendante, contient les Dilucidationes de Marcello Donati, comte de Ponzane. "La première éd.,1602-34, 7 vols., dont le septième tome, donné par J.P.Pareus, n'est pas commun, contient plusieurs de pièces que le nouvel éditeur n'a pas fait entrer dans la réimpression (de 1734)" (Brunet,II, 1771) Comme philologue, Gruter joignait à une immense érudition un il critique très exercés ; Duker, Drakenborch, Burmann et autres, qui ont publié après lui des auteurs qu'il avait édités, ont signalé son talent d'interprète et de correcteur. Le Thesaurus Inscriptionum, qu'il recueillit avec l'aide de Scaliger, a longtemps été indispensable à qui voulait connaitre à fond les antiquités romaines. Gruter a, de plus, montré un gout constant pour la poésie ; les recueils des poètes latins modernes qu'il avait rassemblés ont donné l'idée des collections de ce genre ailleurs en Europe Recueil très précieux, contenant une quantité de dissertations philologiques émanant des humanistes des XVe et XVIe siècles, lesquelles étaient devenues très rares, Un septième volume fut ajouté par Pareus, adversaire de Gruter ; ce dernier y est fort maltraité. Une nouvelle édition du recueil de Gruter fut faite à Florence, en 3 vol. in-f°, 1737-1747 ; on y trouve de plus les biographies des érudits auteurs des traités rassemblés dans cet ouvrage. Le relevé du contenu de chaque volume de la première édition se trouve à la p. 247 de la Bibliotheca Latinitatis restitutae de Noltenius et dans la Bibliographia antiquaria de Fabricius. M6-B.
