This has encouraged us to present a second series of notiunculae, in which other passages are dealt with. We follow the order of Musurillo's edition. Martyrium Carpi 17. In the paragraphs 9-20 of the Greek version of these Acta Carpus in answer to the proconsul's invitation to offer sacrifice to the gods polemically expounds a condensed version of a full-scale Christian theory about the pagan gods. The Latin recension only has the equivalent of some statements at the beginning of the Greek passage in question. It indeed seems rather unlikely that a Roman governor would have allowed any extensive exposition of ideas so insulting to official Roman religion. Be that as it may, a thorough examination of the exposition as such might provide a clue as to the date of the Greek document, without of course proving anything about the time of the passion itself. - Wikipedia: Jan N. Omstreeks het jaar 423 schreef Augustinus (354-430) De cura pro mortuis gerenda. In dit geschrift ontwerpt hij een nieuwe betekenis voor traditionele begrafenisrituelen die strookt met het christelijk geloof. De liefdevolle verzorging van het stoffelijk overschot van een overledene is een natuurlijke neiging van normale mensen. De bijbel bevat ettelijke voorbeelden en gelovigen worden erdoor herinnerd aan de belofte van de lichamelijke opstanding. Dit impliceert niet dat begrafenisrituelen voor de overledene volstrekt onmisbaar zijn. Dan zouden mensen van wie het lichaam door allerlei omstandigheden niet begraven kan worden in het nadeel zijn. Overledenen zijn echter altijd in Gods handen. Voor een gelovige brengt zelfs totale vernietiging van zijn lichaam geen onherstelbaar nadeel met zich mee. Wat christenen kunnen en moeten doen is bidden voor een overledene. Dit gebed heeft effect wanneer de overledene een goed leven heeft geleid. In de tweede helft van het geschrift bespreekt Augustinus een verwante materie. Mensen dromen soms dat overleden personen waardevolle aanwijzingen geven en ze denken dan dat er inderdaad een dode is verschenen. Dat is een misverstand: we dromen immers ook over levenden die aanwijsbaar elders zijn, soms zelfs ver weg. In een droom ziet men slechts gedaanten die op de doden of levenden lijken. Daarmee is nog geen antwoord gegeven op de vraag wat er dan wel aan de hand was. Zijn het misschien engelen die in Gods opdracht een boodschap overbrengen? Of verschijnen er in sommige gevallen toch bijzondere doden zelf zoals martelaren? Augustinus erkent dat zijn inzicht hier tekortschiet. Aurelius Augustinus (354?430), beter bekend als Augustinus van Hippo, was een vroege kerkvader, filosoof en theoloog. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de meest invloedrijke christelijke denkers in de geschiedenis. Zijn werken ? waaronder Belijdenissen, De stad van God en De cura pro mortuis gerenda ? hebben diepgaande invloed gehad op de ontwikkeling van de christelijke theologie en Westerse filosofie. In deze latere brief onderzoekt hij ten diepste vragen rond rituelen, hoop en de omgang met de doden in het licht van geloof en opstanding.
