Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. January 6, 1955. It was on the occasion of President Dwight D. Eisenhowers third annual State of the Union message. The president unexpectedly began his speech by mentioning that it was January 6 and the 72nd birthday of the venerable Speaker of the House, and publicly wishing for Mr. Rayburn many happy returns of the day.Instantly, the crowd that filled the House chamber was on its feet, noisily cheering, whistling, and stamping its feet and clapping its hands in a reverberating approval of the Speaker. Visitors in the galleries could not distinguish Republican from Democrat. - Speaker Jim WrightPrepared on the seventy-fifth anniversary of his election as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, this collection includes valedictory thoughts about Mr. Rayburn by two of the most significant leaders of Fort Worth historySpeaker Jim Wright and Dee J. Kellyas well as essays by academics about Mr. Rayburns lasting impact on his district, on major legislation, and on Texas. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Reflections on Wright is a collection of essays on Jim Wright from his early years through his retirement from the House of Representatives. Wright was one of the most influential members of Congress in the latter part of the twentieth century and had a major role in policies such as the interstate highway system and American policy in Central America. Foreclosed from moving to the Senate, Wright eventually sought to become Majority Leader and won in a hotly contested race against California's Phil Burton. Both as Majority Leader and as Speaker, Wright proved himself an exceptionally strong leader. Indeed, Wright pushed his agenda so strongly that it led to grumbling among members of his caucus. With attacks on his ethics by Georgia Republican Newt Gingrich, attacks that heralded a new level of viciousness between the two parties in the House, Wright resigned and returned to Fort Worth. For most of the remainder of his life, he taught at Texas Christian University.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Texas' political power really began in the late nineteenth century, when Texas congressmen first began to wield power as committee chairs and party leaders. In the era of Woodrow Wilson, Texas clout intensified as Senator Morris Sheppard introduced the Prohibition legislation with which his name is associated today. John Nance Garner's political influence was first felt in the Wilson administration, as a liaison on war matters between the administration and the House, then grew in the Hoover era when Garner rose to minority leadership and critic of Hoover administration policies. In the Roosevelt era, Texas was a Democratic state and, with Democratic control of Congress and a Democratic president, the state's power grew--John Garner became vice president in 1933, and Texans chaired six House committees: Agriculture, Interstate and Foreign Commerce, Judiciary, Public Buildings, Rivers and Harbors, and Territories. And during the Eisenhower years, Lyndon Johnson, Sam Rayburn's protege, became minority and then majority leader of the Senate. It was an extraordinary time with Texans in the top leadership of both the House and the Senate. This book is the story of the men and women who represented Texas in Congress. For a century and a quarter they were masters of congressional politics and represented Texas on the national stage. Authors Jim Riddlesperger and Tony Champagne paint lively pictures of the characters--party leaders, committee chairs, and the political pioneers--who made Texas a major player in congressional politics for the past 125 years, as well as the ideologues and the buffoons that are also part of the Texas congressional story. "A joint project of the Center for Texas Studies at TCU and TCU Press." Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
