Añadir al carritoUnbound. Condición: Near Fine. A collection of nine letters to a Massachusetts student, Malcolm Moulton from French speaking students in Europe during World War II. All items very good or better with tears from opening. A small collection of letters written between high school aged boys writing in France and the United States during World War II. Most of the letters are from Jacques Lefrancq in France to Malcolm Moulton in Massachusetts. The letters seem to be used for educational purposes, each boy working on the other's language and checking their progress with one another. The letters take place in the early days of World War II and the struggles in Europe slowly find their way into the letters. Some of the mentions are in passing, a teacher has "mobilized" and been replaced, others are more direct. In October 9, 1939 Jacques writes, "Well now, Malcolm, war is declared. But, here we don't see any difference in the life of the people. Everyone is very quiet and nobody is distracted; nobody speaks of evacuation. The life is the same as before, except that we see many soldiers from a week of two; the frontier is very well watched. It seems that General Staff expects to a German offensive through Belgium; but, I think that nothing will happen before next Spring. There will be small skirmishes, but no decisive battle." He continues discusses seeing British soldiers, "Tommies," in the French countryside, travel restrictions, and air raid alarms. A letter dated December 1940 reads, "I think that the American don't like war very much.but I don't know whether they will not be obliged to do it; for war spreads over Europa, little by little, and perhaps will it reach U.S.A.I think the great danger for America is Japan, and that they have more to be frightened of the Japanese than of the Germans." In the same letter Jacques discusses Germany's control in France writing that "all of France is under control of Germany; the newspapers, the wireless are under German control, and I'm not sure this letter will not be examined by a German." Many of the letters are filed with newspaper clippings and photographs of Jacques and his family. The final letter is dated 1945 and in it Jacques fills Malcolm in on why they haven't corresponded in years due to lost letters and war. Both men at this point are in the Army and have missed each other as Malcolm had written that he was stationed in Europe but Jacques had missed the letter. He finishes with "I hope you'll excuse me I write such broken English but I have neither read nor write English for such a long time." A modest but interesting archive detailing a young Frenchman's time during World War II.…
