Añadir al carritoCondición: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1924). SB. xvi + 108pp plates Published Price £18 Among the many valuable volumes in the well-tilled field of firearms history, this book stands out. Its importance lies in its detailed look at the development of weapons from the 16th to the 19th centuries from the wheel- and matchlock to the percussion system. Early in that period gunsmiths made customised individual weapons, with no interchangeable parts, and only rough parity in ballistics. Jackson looks at these early weapons, and then describes the Snaphaunce guns that followed them. The flintlocks and muskets of the 17th Century and 18th Century come next, with the percussion bullet completing the story. There is a substantial appendix on Scottish Firearms by Charles E. Whitelaw, accompanied by a list of Scottish gun makers. Scottish guns were finely made and had a style of their own, which is well illustrated by this section. There are 141 illustrations which add greatly to this volumeâs value and to the feast of information it contains.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Hardcover with dust jacket showing signs of wear to corners, edges and tearing to head of spine. Some markings and sun fading to jacket. Blue covers with gold lettering to spine. Mild wear noted to tail of spine. This book first published in 1923. Pages clean and unmarked with many illustrations. This volume is lavishly illustrated from examples in the authors' private collections, which have not been reproduced elsewhere. As specialists with an unequalled knowledge of their subject, the authors have achieved an outstandingly detailed and informative study both of the mechanism and the artistic embellishment of the weapons described; the book is a necessity to every collector and amateur of firearms.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Jackson, Herbert J. European Hand Firearms of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth & Eighteenth Centuries. With a Treatise on Scottish Hand Firearms by Charles E. Whitelaw. New York: Bramhall House (a division of Clarkson N. Potter, Inc.), by arrangement with The Holland Press, Ltd. Originally published 1923. This Bramhall House edition mid-20th century (c. 1950s-early 1960s). Large square quarto, navy cloth with gilt spine titling, illustrated throughout with photographic plates. In original pictorial dust jacket. A substantial and highly regarded reference work covering European pistols, flintlocks, sporting arms, locks, barrels, mounts, and ornamentation of the 16th-18th centuries. The volume includes extensive photographic plates (including full-page figures) and a dedicated scholarly section on Scottish firearms by Whitelaw. Long considered a foundational collector's reference, the work blends technical analysis with connoisseurship and remains frequently cited in arms literature. Condition: Book is Very Good. Navy cloth clean and solid with minor shelf wear and light rubbing at lower edges; corners gently bumped. Binding firm and square. Interior clean, bright, and unmarked; plates crisp and well printed. No writing or bookplates observed. Dust jacket Good: complete but shows notable edge wear, creasing, short tears, and chipping at spine head and corners; moderate surface rubbing and toning. Copyright page states 'First published 1923' with 'This edition published by Bramhall House' and printer's line 'abcdefgh.' Bramhall House commonly used letter lines rather than number lines; the presence of the full sequence indicates an early printing of this Bramhall House reissue (not the original 1923 Holland Press issue). Likely printed c. 1950s-early 1960s, consistent with Bramhall House design, typography, and jacket style of the period.
