Story of the Mount of the Holy Cross, the northernmost fourteen thousand foot mountain in the Sawatch Range, part of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the northeast face of which bears a distinct cross-shaped snowfield. The first recorded ascent was in 1873 led by Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, to whom this volume is dedicated; the expedition included photographer William H. Jackson who also kept a diart of the climb. The powerfully symbolic mount is vividly immortalized in Jackson's wet plate photographs, artist Thomas Moran's painting, and Longfellow's poem "The Snowy Cross". Co-author Clarence S.
