The first recorded ascent was in 1873 led by Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, to whom this volume is dedicated; the expedition included photographer William H. Jackson who also kept a diart of the climb. The powerfully symbolic mount is vividly immortalized in Jackson's wet plate photographs, artist Thomas Moran's painting, and Longfellow's poem "The Snowy Cross". Co-author Clarence S. Overall, a Near Very Good copy in a like, unclipped dust jacket, which has chipped bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, a tear which begins at the head of the rear hinge and ends across the letter "e" in the first word of the title, but does not affect the legibility. The jacket also has creased wear with a few short tears to the edges, a 1" x 1" loss to the tail of the front, and rubbing to the covers with minor staining to the back and a touch of sunning to the spine. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar.
