The exhibition press release noted: "Hans Burkhardt - Paintings of the 1960s" includes early works of that deca…de which extended Burkhardt's uniquely poignant abstract expressionist paintings of the 1950s. He was one of the few painters of that period who steadfastly flaunted, and indeed thrived in spite of, the political censorship and hostility toward modern abstract painting that informed much of the 1950s and reached levels ofhysteria in the McCarthy era in L.A. That political hostility may partly suggest why the younger generation of L.A. artists of the 1960s might have been inclined toward popular imagery and minimal art as their primary sensibility. Their artistic response was in stark contrast to this era of youthful social revolution that informed every aspect of the times; particularly in terms of political revolt against the escalation of the Vietnam War. Burkhardt, in contrast, extended abstract expressionism into astounding and revolutionary realms, reaching apotheosis in paintings that scholars have cited as masterpieces of 20th century painting; among them Burkhardt's skull painting, "My Lai," which will be included in this important exhibition. In exceptionally good condition.

George Condo catalog for the June 18 September 3, 2011 exhibition held at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts,Los Angeles.16 pages, 13 artworks. n this exhibition, Condo merges, through a series of works entitled More Sketches of Spain for Miles Davis, his admiration of Spanish masters along with his… profound admiration for the music of Miles Davis, whose own jazz masterpiece album recording was entitled Sketches of Spain. In these works from 1991 large-scale sheets and smaller works on paper executed in etching and aquatint Condo employs an eloquent Picasso-like line with masterful draftsmanship and bravura, giving sly references to Picasso, Dali, Velázquez, etc. Miles Davis has also long been a source of inspiration in Condo s works. One such example is Condo s major painting in the Eli Broad collection entitled Dancing to Miles exhibited at the 1987 Whitney Biennial. Also included here is an important early painting on canvas that was part of Condo s first solo exhibition, which was presented in Los Angeles from 1983, at the Ulrike Kantor Gallery and followed in quick succession by two shows in New York City that year, which catapulted Condo s career on the national scene.
