If so, will you let bygones be bygones - and come over to Toppesfield some time?' She suggests a date, 'Or any Sunday lunch in the immediate future', stating that 'after July, all plans are "Hitler permitting"!' Driberg has noted his acceptance of the invitation up one margin. [Driberg was a Lecturer in Anthropology at Cambridge University from 1934 to 1942. His brother was the colourful Labour MP Tom Driberg.

Antoinette (Tony) Powell-Cotton was the daughter of Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), explorer, naturalist, founder in 1896 of the Quex Museum (the Powell-Cotton collection), at Birchington, Kent. 3pp., 12mo. Fair, on lightly-aged paper, with a couple of minor damp stains to the first leaf of two. She writes that her family have just spoken to Professor Herskovits [the American anthropologist Melville Jean Herskovits (1895-1963)], 'and he gave us a message that you would like to see our specimens from Angola'. Her family would be 'pleased to show them and feel sure we would glean a great deal of interesting information' from Driberg, but they are afraid Herskovits 'misunderstood us': 'We said we hoped to meet you one day at a lecture or something like that', but they feel that it is 'rather a long way to come from Cambridge especially to see the things which may not be at all in your line, and though we think the details obtained regarding them to be fairly accurate we are complete amateurs.' They would however be delighted to show Driberg the specimens in London, 'and to hear any comments & suggestions you may have to make'.

A significant item, written, as his biographer Roy Abrahams explains, by a man who was 'almost single-handedly responsible for keeping academic social anthropology, and one might add the place of African research within it, alive in the small Archaeology and Anthropology Department in Cambridge in those otherwise rather barren days of the 1930s'. 45pp., 12mo. In a ruled, stitched notebook without cover. Written in pencil on stained and aged paper. Some of the text is faded. A piecemeal notebook, filled in 'on the hoof', with the sense of immediacy such an approach entails, containing a mixture of linguistic, practical and anthropological entries, as the following quotations indicate. The hand is a difficult one, and the transcriptions are not entirely certain. On 27 March 1923 Driberg writes: 'Lolami up Lotimoir killed | Loknangai up Lomuti of Longelra | Loleman's brother Nartot was killed by a Japosa who has since died of small pox. | So brought in at end of month by Lotimoi'. On 4 April 1923: 'Sureai ajie here. migrated long ago. Kathiangon is the H.Q. 7 days. friendly with Japoli. Some people - no chief known. Porok is the important elder. They cultivate a little tobacco'. On 6 April 1923, at Parengya: 'Oponi killed at Lokodoka u/o Morukurnon. Some time before Amonytim's. Wolf was present with his soldiers. Oponi was walking to awi & was killed on the road. He was walking with a few Ethan. No cause known.' & very strong feeling here against the oti & they ask that Wolf may never return'. Shortly afterwards he writes: 'Raid on Jjongkothi & steal their cattle. May they go on raiding them please? Mustn't come anyway to me if they are raided back. Jjongkotha also steal cattle. 2 months away. Administration. Dont recommend it. Kailil R. Tinkor & all that river are away with Halash raiding Tinkana. Lommima & "Lokinon" landing. Have been away several days.' Elsewhere he writes: 'There was a big Lomoti who died in 1905. Lived at Morukori'. A late entry reads: 'Abyssinian party gone to Arukomugi, when a section of Parenga Topotha lies N. about 20 miles N.G. of Lokothowran water in Lopure river. They go from the W. to shoot elephant at Nyangyang-ayik. They are either there nor or at Morinyogi. Both uninhabited. Lomunimri is away with Nikor against Tinkana'. On 15 August 1923: '/woman Natoranyang taken at Morukgrith escaped from Habash about 3 weeks ago. Was kept by Lomininoir - one of the other captives was killed & the rest & the rest taken elsewhere.' The last entry is a page of 'Readings from Loringa Hill. 15/1/25'. Also included are lists of words, including a full page headed 'Old Men', beginning with LODUNGOTULYA LOTHOAMOI | oldest (NYIMORU) in Namminchik, village of Lottmyen'. One page carries a crude pencil plan of the territory. Among a number of observations is the following: 'Tapose | Butter & milk pots. Milk may not be brought out of pot at midday. Cattle wd die. Only early in morning & evening. Only applies to Opoko. You can milk with hands or calabash. | May not drink from trough. That is the only time one can drink otherwise when cattle drink. No prohibition about wells.' The context of the present item is explained at the end of this entry. In his paper on Driberg, Roy Abrahams (Journal of the Anthropological Society of Oxford, January 2011) fills in the context in which the present item was written, describing Driberg's 'colourfully eccentric life as a colonial administrator in Uganda and neighbouring areas of the Sudan until 1926 [.] After a successful period of several years among the Lango of northern Uganda, Driberg was moved in 1922 to the newly 'pacified' Didinga mountains on the Sudan border. When the area was formally taken back under the Sudan administration, he remained in charge there and transferred to the Sudan Political Service. As earlier among the Lango, he seems to have become strongly attached to the people ? and also to their highland country ? and he was especially keen to defend them against their enemies, the as yet unadministered Toposa pastoralists, who were apparently taking advantage of their weakened state and that of their closely related Longarim neighbours. Contrary to orders from above he led some forays against the Toposa, and he was keen to be sent some military reinforcements, which he hoped would persuade them to pay compensation for their raids and make peace through the threat of force. In pursuit of this he got caught up in a mire of deception, claiming falsely that the Toposa had carried out a particularly serious raid which he had repelled with local police support. It appears that at the time he was overworking and genuinely unwell, with symptoms of jaundice. In the end, faced with an imminent government strike force to punish the Toposa for this fictive raid, he confessed his fabrications and was allowed to resign, albeit it seems with a pension.'.

They electrified & stimulated my mind on a great many subjects of my previous study, introduced several quite new ones (including all the African stuff), and filled some large lacunae in my own sphere especially with regard to Georgia & Kurdistan.' He hopes to be able to put what he has learnt 'to some practical use', but before he does he also hopes to be 'at Cambridge again in which case I will certainly take you at your word & spend a night with you.' Driberg lectured in Anthropology at Cambridge between 1934 and 1942.

2pp., 12mo. 28 lines. In fair condition, on aged high-acidity paper. Homburger begins by thanking Driberg for his 'papers' and expressing pleasure at their meeting. He encloses 'a list [not present] of feila words (just a few typical) and a draft of my paper not complete nor absolutely definite but which will shew you that I have pretty sound basis for my ideas as to the sénégalais nilotique.' 'Great difficulties', he considers, 'have arisen [.] from mixing anthropologie [sic] & linguistics. North Frenchmen & South are different races but speak one language to day [sic] though they did not do so a thousand years ago.' The last paragraph discusses 'Meinhof's paper on the Kordofan tribes'.

Driberg, 19, Dryden Chambers, W.1.', above which, in manuscript: 'NL. N. 10 pt Miscellany'. Driberg is clearly the author: 'Anyanga' is a surname common in the area of Kenya in which he was based as a colonial offical. The first paragraph gives an indication of the tone of the piece: 'The War left me with one fragrant memory. Her name was Yvonne Beaubouchais, and the date was 1915. I was held up in Maiseille, [sic] surely the most romantic town in Europe, with an atmosphere all of its own. East meets West here much more than in Suez, or so it always seems to me. Suez is too Eastern and yet not Eastern at all: it is altogether too meretricious, too much the courtesan laying herself out to allure the jaded Westerner. But Marseille is alive and not at all self-conscious. Every race and creed meets on an equality: Spahis jostle against Greeks: Levantines and Libyans, French, Italians and Indians drink harmoniously at the same cafes: Malays and Malagash, Turks and Syrians are equally at home, and even the English become less Anglic and Americans less nasal. There is a camaraderie about the place which takes no account of East or West: kardamom and garlic, betel and saffron, blend in a delightful harmony of the senses such as no other town possesses.' He finds Yvonne Beaubouchais 'something different': 'It may have been a certain air of aloofness, a kind of meditative remoteness which seemed in that atmosphere singularly attractive. [.] She was not beautiful, though definitely attractive, but it was her voice which made me catch my breath with astonishment. It was the most musical voice I have ever heard, not too high and not too low, and even in ordering of a creme-de-menthe it had a quality of enchantment in it such as would turn the head of an experienced man: and I was only a boy then. [.] it was on the third day, I think - suddenly Yvonne made a suggestion which, uttered in the most natural and conversational way, made me draw a deep breath of amazement. [.] I was certainly confused by her proposal that in order to cement the entente (yes, that was the reason expressly stated) I should become the father of her child. [.] she had discussed the matter with her fiance, and they both agreed that it would be a magnificent thing for the Entente to be cemented in this way: it would be a mascot or a symbol or whatever you like to call it ensuring the success of the allied armies.
