Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Almost a generation before Washington, Henry and Jefferson even were born, two Englishmen, concealing their identities with the honoured ancient name of Cato, wrote newspaper articles condemning tyranny and advancing principles of liberty that immensely influenced American colonists. The Englishmen were John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon. Their prototype was Cato the Younger (95-46 BC), the implacable foe of Julius Caesar and a champion of liberty and republican principles. Their 144 essays were published from 1720 to 1723, originally in the "London Journal", later in the "British Journal". Subsequently collected as "Cato's Letters", these "Essays on Liberty, Civil and Religious" became so popular that virtually 40 per cent of the American colonists' private libraries contained copies of them. The history of liberty in America is therefore not understandable, and might never have occurred, without "Cato's Letters". For in them, the nature of politics and tyranny, the proper limits of government, and freedom of conscience as indispensable to individual liberty are deliberately and eloquently explored. This two-volume edition offers minimally modernised versions of the letters from the four-volume sixth edition printed in London in 1755. A generation before Washington, two Englishmen, under the name of Cato, wrote newspaper articles condemning tyranny and advancing principles of liberty that influenced American colonists. This two-volume edition offers versions of the letters from the four-volume sixth edition printed in 1755. The Advisory Committee chaired by Lord Weir (late Secretary of State for the RAF) was created to report to Churchill on how best to organise imperial air routes and develop civil aviation in the most cost effective way. This document contains the report it submitted to Churchill dated 19 April 1920, with Trenchard's separate report of 20 April 1920, and an Appendix summarising the more important steps taken by the Air Ministry for the assistance of Civil Aviation. It makes recommendations on the amount of financial support for approved routes from London to Paris and Brussels (and approved extensions therefrom), and Scandinavia using flying boats, amphibious craft, etc. Companies applying to run those routes should be approved conditional on regularity and speed of service offered. Trenchard submitted his separate report as he did not agree with all the Committee's recommendations. He advised against direct subsidies to air transport companies, preferring to fund design and research into experimental machines instead.…

The Advisory Committee chaired by Lord Weir (late Secretary of State for the RAF) was created to report to Churchill on how best to organise imperial air routes. In this report, it recommends developing the route from Egypt to India first (eventually this would connect on to Australia) and the route to South Africa via Egypt next. This should be led by private business with state support. The GPO should tender out for the corresponding airmail service. The RAF can place surplus engines and other materials at the disposal of the Civil Aviation Department for free distribution. Prohibitions on civil aviation in Egypt and India should be lifted.…
