Octavo, 10" tall, [2] + 620 + 4 engraved plate pages, quarter cloth over boards. A good copy only, given that the covers and fly-lea…ves are loose, the cloth back strip is partially missing, the boards are edge worn scuffed and worn through at the fore-corner tips--BUT the interior is in very good condition, paper clean, supple (pre-civil war paper was of a generally higher quality) only lightly yellowed, and relatively unfoxed. Still a good reading copy of this mostly original compendium of the culture in the middle of the 19th Century. A period time-capsule of the intellectual state of mind.

The binding is rubbed and bumped. The front hinge is just starting to crease, but the binding is sound. A name is ink stamped on the fort cover bus is difficult to read. The f…ront flyleaf has an attractive bookplate (appears to be early 20th century) of "Eldon S. Dummit". This was likely Eldon Steven Summit (1896-1973), the 34th Attorney General of Kentucky and the Republican candidate for Governor of Kentucky in 1947. The text block is sound, and the text is toned. The Engraved title page states 1812, but the issues are for 1813. Contains 6 issues for March, 1813 through September, 1813, without an issue for April (possibly never published; the pagination is continuous and not lacking pages). There are 5 full--page copperplate engravings, including the engraved title. The other engravings are: Hon. William Heath; Hon. Theodore Sedgwick; Boston Common (with a tree); and His Excellency Caleb Strong, Governor of Massachusetts. The focus of this journal was the arts and theater, but some of the issues also had information on leaders who participated in the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. Twenty-two pieces are to be read, ranging from works by Dickens, Tennyson, and 'Shakspere', to 'The Sewing School for Scandal' and 'A Cure for Dudes' by Wheelwright, 'The Sleeping Car' by Howells, 'A Dialogue' by 'Turguenieff' and 'Ulf in Ireland' by Charles de Kay. According to the description of a letter by Riddle in the Mary Wright Sewall Papers in the Indianapolis Marion County Public Library, he 'debuted in Boston in 1875 playing Romeo, and became attached to several stock companies in Boston, Philadelphia, and Montreal. From 1878 to 1881 he was an instructor of elocution at Harvard. He gave readings of literature in cities across the U.S. Among his most successful were Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream with Mendelssohn's music, Byron's Manfred with Schumann's music, and Oedipus Tyrannus with the music of John K.
