Los arquitectos que los proyectaron compartían la idea de la arquitectura como un servicio a la sociedad -Oíza, Sierra, Alvear, Romany, Cubillo, Vázquez de Castro, Iñiguez de Onzoño, Ruiz Hervás, Leoz, Ambrós, García Benito, García Rodríguez, Quereizeta, Molezún, Corrales, Carvajal, García de Paredes y sus colaboradores Miquel, Ferrán, Mangada, Ramón, López Candeira, Aracil o el holandés Beekhof, entonces recién licenciados, más tarde arquitectos de referencia- e hicieron una interpretación propia de los precedentes internacionales, condicionada por la economía pero muy lejos de corrientes castizas o regionalistas. La publicación es un trabajo elaborado dentro del marco del Grupo de Investigación de Vivienda Colectiva del Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos de la UPM, que parte de las bases pedagógicas del programa de «Sociología y Vivienda» iniciado hace veinte años por el catedrático Manuel de las Casas. De ahí se ha derivado un modo propio de investigación basado en el acopio sistemático de información sobre proyectos construidos para su ulterior análisis y comparación, hasta definir un sistema propio de examen que aspira a objetivar la vivienda para vincular los resultados solo a elementos avalados por una cualidad medible y, por tanto, verificable.
