Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers an overview of the history of the colonization of various Caribbean islands and the coastal mainland of South and Central America, from the first arrival of Spanish explorers through the mid-18th century. The author examines the motivations of the colonizers, the processes of colonization, and the impact on indigenous populations and the environment. The book discusses the role of slavery, economic exploitation, religious conversion, and cultural exchange in shaping the development of these colonies. It also explores the power dynamics between colonizing nations and their colonies, as well as the resistance and resilience of indigenous peoples. The author's insights provide a valuable perspective on the complex and often tragic history of European colonialism in the Americas. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. A Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and Trades of the Europeans in the East and West Indies is an influential 18th-century historical treatise written by the French Enlightenment thinker Abbé Raynal (Guillaume-Thomas-François) with major contributions from the philosopher Denis Diderot. First translated into English by John Obadiah Justamond in 1776, this multi-volume masterwork provides a highly critical, global analysis of European colonial expansion, maritime trade networks, and the brutal realities of the transatlantic slave trade. Rare & Historical Editions T. Cadell Second Edition (1776):This is the definitive 18th-century English printing published in London by T. Cadell. Features the complete text across five distinct volumes, including early fold-out maps drawn by royal geographers like Thomas Kitchin. Overview of Content Coverage The text is systematically structured across its volumes to cover the complete history of global commercial exchange: East Indies (Volumes 1-2): Details the maritime discoveries, military conquests, and commercial monopolies established by the Portuguese, Dutch, French, English, and Spanish empires in Asia and India. West Indies & South America (Volumes 3-4): Documents the discovery of the Americas, the conquest of Mexico and Peru, and the rise of sugar and tobacco plantations. North America & Philosophical Summary (Volume 5): Explores the English colonies (from New England to Florida), provides early commentary on the American Revolution, and features Diderot's radical, anti-colonial philosophical reflections on how global trade altered European morals and politics. The Maps: The 1776 edition originally featured detailed fold-out maps by cartographer Thomas Kitchin. Matching Bindings: Finding all five volumes bound in their original, matching 18th-century calfskin leather with intact spines is what commands the premium price tags.

Añadir al carritoLeather. Condición: Good Only. Not Stated Ilustrador. First edition. A smart, first edition set of this work on the life of King Louis XV of France, written by Mouffle D'Angerville and translated by J.O. Justamond. Complete in four volumes, written by Barthélemy François Joseph Mouffle d'Angerville, and translated to English by J.O. Justamond. This four volume set explores the life of King Louis XV of France, as well as his court, his monarchy, and events that occurred during his reign (such as the Seven Years War). Louis XV, known as Louis the Beloved, was King of France from 1 September 1715 until his death in 1774. His reign of almost 59 years (from 1715 to 1774) was the second longest in the history of France, exceeded only by his predecessor, Louis XIV, who had ruled for 72 years (from 1643 to 1715). His grandson and successor Louis XVI would inherit a kingdom in need of financial and political reform which would ultimately lead to the French Revolution of 1789. This set contains a lovely frontispiece of King Louis XV to the verso of the title page in Volume I. Bound in half calf with marble covered boards. Externally, smart. Rubbing along the spines and extremities. Small chip in the binding to the tail of the spine on Volume II. Chipping to the spine labels on all volumes. Discolouration to the fore-edge of all volumes. Joints to Volume I are starting but remain firm. Front board of Volume II is held by bottom cord only and may detach with extensive handling. Front joint to Volume III is starting but remains firm. Front joint to Volume IV is weak. Internally, front hinge to Volume II has failed. Front and rear hinges in all other volumes are tender. Internally, all volumes firmly bound. Internally, scattered spots to the first and last few pages of all volumes, and the odd spot throughout, but otherwise pages are bright and clean. Good Only. book.
