Ow VG: 238pp + 1 portrait frontis of Wang, Jingwei (aka WONG, Ching-Wei; 4 May 1883-10 November 1944), born as Wang Zhaoming (Wang Chao-ming), but widely known by his pen name "Jingwei" He was initially a member of the left wing of the Kuomintang (KMT), leading a government in Wuhan in opposition to the right wing government, but later became increasingly anti-communist after his efforts to collaborate with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) ended in political failure. Wang was a close associate of Sun Yat-sen for the last twenty years of Sun's life. After Sun's death Wang lost a political struggle with Chiang Kai-shek for control over the KMT. Wang remained inside the KMT but continued to have disagreements with Chiang until the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, after which he accepted an invitation from the Japanese Empire to form a Japanese-supported collaborationist government in Nanjing until he died, shortly before the end of World War II. Añadir al carritoFirst edition. A hedonistic affair, the 1901 circus involved performances by dozens of prominent male Shanghailanders, some of them in drag. Among them was the British merchant Frank Maitland (stage name: Signor Frankini), who wowed the crowd with Sweetheart, his seesawing Mongolian mare. The volume's print-run was likely small, and the only other copy traced is the University of Amsterdam's. The event was the brainchild of the Shanghai Race Club and was the third held in the city after those in 1894 and 1895. Guests were treated to displays by the likes of Tottie Longsocks (D. W. Crawford, the managing director of Lane, Crawford & Co.), while Jardine, Matheson's R. Sutherland, performing as Blue-Eyed Bouncing Birdie, introduced his wonderfully trained elephant (E. P. Hudson, New Zealand Insurance Company). The spirited letterpress, written by one of the organizers, is embellished by illustrations on almost every page. Scenes from the wild display were captured by another member of the organizing committee, the leading cartoonist H. W. G. Hayter (1862-1915), and several of his sketches are reproduced. The accompanying collection of original photographs include several of Sweetheart that were not published in the book. The circus's unofficial photographer was D. Satow, who operated out of a studio on Nanking Road. Quarto. Colour frontispiece; text with photographic half-tones and illustrations after sketches by H. W. G. Hayter. Accompanying photographs: 4 large albumen prints (270 x 210 mm), remainder medium-size albumen prints (c. 150 x 100 mm), including 2 mounted on paper. Original blue cloth, large blue vignette roundel on front cover, advertisement endpapers, edges red. Vol. a little shaken, cloth cockling in places: very good indeed. Accompanying photographs with old and recent pencilling on verso, several with old paper adhesion also on verso, some fading and creasing, 2 larger prints with couple of adhesive tape repairs.…
