Rare Illustrated Maritime Directory to Pacific Ports by the Spreckels BrothersBeautifully printed guide to Pacific Ports of San Francisco, San Diego, Puget Sound, Portland and Honolulu, including three folding maps, compiled by the prominent shipping firm J.D. Spreckels & Bros. Each port is described, with pilotage, port regulations, and the like. The maps are:The Harbor of San Francisco, and Tributary Waters. Compiled from U.S. Coast Survey Charts. The Piers of the City of San Francisco, Compiled from Official Maps.Map of San Diego Bay, California. 1889.The maps were produced in 1889 by A.M. Clay. The detailed lithograph chart of San Francisco Bay presents a comprehensive overview of the region from Half Moon Bay north through the Golden Gate to Vallejo and Martinez. It carefully identifies the primary ship channel, major anchorages, prominent coastal points, and the extensive maritime infrastructure that was essential to late-nineteenth-century Pacific Coast commerce. The geographic detail of the chart firmly emphasizes the maritime approaches and internal navigational routes of the Bay Area. Significant navigational hazards such as Duxbury Reef, the Four Fathom Bank, and Shag Rock are clearly charted, alongside vital maritime aids including the principal lighthouses and the Mare Island Navy Yard. Coastal settlements, railroad terminals, and emerging industrial centers including Oakland, Brooklyn, Alameda, and Saucelito (Sausalito) reflect the rapid integration of transcontinental rail networks with global Pacific shipping routes.John D. Spreckels and his brothers controlled a vast shipping empire, moving lucrative sugar harvests from Hawaii and general freight along the Pacific coast. Their 1889 directory, into which this chart was bound, functioned as a practical guide for shipmasters. It provided critical operational details, including pilotage regulations, towage fees, and port charges for commercial destinations extending from the Pacific Northwest to the Hawaiian Islands.RarityRare in the market. Only 2 examples in RBH in the last 80+ years. Book.
