Geburtstag noch einmal ins Gedächtnis zurück, unter welch dramatischen, ja manchmal komischen Umständen er seit seiner frühesten Kindheit mehrmals dem Tod von der Schippe sprang. Was Boldizsär hier anschaulich und spannend, zuweilen nicht ohne Selbstironie und Humor zu berichten weiß, sind authentische Begebenheiten aus einem bewegten und engagiertgelebten Leben. Ivan Boldizsär wurde 1912 in Budapest geboren. Nach seinem Studium an der medizinischen und philosophischen Fakultät schloß er sich den Dorfforschern an, um durch soziographische Arbeiten die unerträglichen Lebensbedingungen der Landbevölkerung publik zu machen. Während des zweiten Weltkriegs wurde er an der Ostfront verwundet, desertierte, war Mitglied einer Widerstandsgruppe, wurde von den Faschisten verhaftet und entging nur knapp seiner Hinrichtung. Nach der Befreiung nahm er an den Pariser Friedensverhandlungen teil, war von 1947 bis 1951 stellvertretender Außenminister, dann Chefredakteur mehrerer Zeitschriften,leitet seit nunmehr zwei Jahrzehnten die Redaktion des New Hungarian Quarterly" und ist seit 1970 Präsident des ungarischen PEN-Clubs. Daneben entstanden einige Romane, und in mehreren Reisetagebüchern fand Boldizsärs rege Tätigkeit als Botschafter der ungarischen Kultur" literarischen Niederschlag. Bei mir ist die schriftstellerische Vene enger.als nötig und die politische Arterie weiter", bekennt Ivän Boldizsär und tröstet sich im selben Atemzug damit, daß er in die Literatur einbringe, was andere nicht erlebt haben, oder wenn ja, dann doch nicht in der Lage sind, es zu beschreiben".
