Leider von sehr schlechter Erhaltung: Der Einband mit altem Besitzvermerk auf dem Vorderdeckel *Wessel*, der Einband ist stark angestaubt und fleckig sowie offenbar wasserrandig, Einbanddeckel mit beschädigten Bezugspapieren, der schmale Einbandrücken mit 2 Fehlstellen, Ecken und Kanten sind stark bestoßen, Bindung ist stärker gelockert. Innen mit umfangreichen handschriftlichen Eintragungen von sehr alter Hand auf den Vorsatzblättern vorn und hinten. Die Frontispiztafeln und das Titelblatt sind lose und stark angerändert, das Titelblatt ist am Unterrand knapp beschnitten. Seiten teils gering fleckig, stock- oder fingerfleckig, letzte Seiten zum Unterrand hin wasserrandig, einige Seiten sind angeknickt. Wenige Seiten mit Randnotizen von sehr alter Hand. With some vignettes in the text, plain contemporary parchment, 8° (22 x 17 cm). Unfortunately in very poor condition: the binding has an old ownership note on the front board *Wessel*, the binding is very dusty and stained and appears to have waterstains, the boards have damaged covering papers, the narrow spine has two missing parts, corners and edges are badly bumped, and the binding is quite loose. The inside contains extensive handwritten entries in a very old hand on the endpapers front and back. The frontispiece plates and the title page are loose and heavily margined; the title page is narrowly trimmed at the lower edge. Pages are slightly stained, foxed, or finger-stained, the last pages are waterstained toward the lower edge, and some pages are creased. A few pages contain marginal notes in a very old hand. EROSO il margine bianco al dorso, in coda (senza conseguenze per il testo). Tagli blu. Nonostante i difetti indicati, è un bell'esemplare su carta pesante, stampato in rosso e nero. Capilettera incisi. Numerose figurine incise a legno nel testo, assai raffinate e sorprendenti; una bella incisione a legno di metà pagina; due alberi (civilis e feudorum) incisi.

Jahrhundert und danach. Wir haben nur sehr wenige gesicherte Inf…ormationen über sein Leben. Es wird normalerweise gesagt, dass er zwischen 1480 und 1485 in Madrid geboren wurde , aber einige Gelehrte machen ihn zu einem Galizier oder Burgos . Es gehörte zur Franziskanerprovinz Castilla la Nueva oder darin verbrachte er den größten Teil seines religiösen Lebens, obwohl einige Autoren sagen, dass er in der Provinz Santiago de Compostela bekannte . Er muss um 1505 ins Noviziat eingetreten sein und wurde um 1510 zum Priester geweiht . The first critical edition of the Corpus iuris civilis in the spirit of the humansitic jurisprudence Gregor Haloander (Meltzer) wird mit dem von ihm veranstalteten, zwis…chen 1529 und 1531 in Nürnberg erschienenen Ausgaben der justinianischen Rechtsquellen zum Mittelpunkt der fachlichen Diskussionen um den besten Text der Rechtsquellen und somit um das richtige Recht. Das meiste Material für seine Editionspläne hatte Haloander auf seiner ersten Italienreise gesammelt und mitgebracht, von der er Anfang 1528 zurückkehrte. Für die Ausarbeitung der Druckvorlagen der Digestenausgabe, die bereits im April 1529 erschien, nahm er sich kaum ein Jahr. Für die Gemeinschaft europäischer Juristen war das ein Ereignis allerersten Ranges. Insgesamt wurde die Publikation als eine Art wissenschaftlicher Revolution erlebt. Der gesamte Text war neu gestaltet. Erstmals waren in Haloanders Digesten viele Graeca zu lesen. Die in der Editio Norica von 1529 noch fehlenden Graeca Modestiniana wurden in der Edition Basel 1541 (Andreas Alciat) größtenteils nachgeschoben. Die vollen Inskritpionen der Digestenfragmente (bis D. 24,3) ermöglichten erstmals die alsbald unternommenen Versuche der Rekonstruktion einzelner Schriften römischer Juristen. Haloander ist und bleibt der Schöpfer eines eigenen, gut leserlichen Digestentextes. Gregor Haloander (Meltzer) became the focal point of discussions about the best legal sources text and thus about the right law following his editions of the Justinian law sources he had published in Nuremberg between 1529 and 1531. Haloander had gathered most of the material for his edition during his first Italian travels from which he returned early 1528. He needed hardly a year for preparing the galley proofs for the digest edition, which appeared in April 1529. For the community of European jurists, the results were of the highest quality, regarded as akin to a scholarly revolution. The entire text was revised. For the first time, a large number of Graeca were to be found in Haloander`s digest, The Graeca Modestiniana still missing in the Editio Norica of 1529 were largely added in the Basel 1541 edition. The full inscriptions of the digest fragments (up to D. 24,3) premitted for the first time the promptly initiated attempts at reconstructing the individual texts of Roman jurists. Haloander is and remains the creator of a unique digest text that reads well.

Bound in reused medieval vellum, taken from a 15th-century liturgical antiphonal, beautifully decorated with red staves, bl…ack square notation, and a large illuminated initial in purple and red. A striking and authentic example of early bookbinding reuse (reliure de parchemin réemployé). Inside, the book reveals its long afterlife: Contemporary handwritten notes in Latin concerning legal concepts of pledge (pignus), novation, and obligation, likely by a 17th-century jurist or student of Roman law. Later pencil sketches and caricatures, including one labelled "Rousseau.", probably late 18th or early 19th century, offer a glimpse of Enlightenment-era marginalia added to a 17th-century legal classic. Printed by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, from the same learned family renowned for their cartographic and scholarly printing. Condition: Minor wear to lower spine where the vellum has lifted slightly, exposing the sewing. Otherwise complete, clean, and structurally sound. Pages gently aged, with fine early paper and visible chainlines. A remarkable survival with charm and character.
