Añadir al carritoHardcover with Dust Jacket. Condición: NEAR FINE. Estado de la sobrecubierta: NEAR FINE. First American Edition. First printing per Ahearn with Eliot's introduction unmentioned on the contents page. xv, [7], 1-224, [3] pp. 12mo, sewn binding in khaki cloth, spine lettering in negative blocked in gray, bordered in gilt. FINE copy, exceedingly clean and sharp; DJ is a bit rubbed with some of the usual discoloration of the slate gray, but clean and whole otherwise with price of $5.75 intact. First American Edition, published 24 years after the British edition released in 1937. Jones began the work in 1928 in the wake of his flight from Ditchling, where he had worked at a furiously productive pace alongside Eric Gill as a painter and engraver. He had been engaged to Gill's daughter, Petra, who broke off the engagement to marry a mutual friend. In this period of personal pain and disillusionment, Jones returned to his own memories in The Great War, and began work on a strange and form-defying work that interwove these experiences with Arthurian Legend, long prose sentences with dense and allusive verse, and high-brow vocabulary and Welsh epigrams with military slang and Cockneyisms. 'On reading the book in typescript I was deeply moved. I then regarded it, and I still regard it, as a work of genius,' writes the first publisher, T.S. Eliot in a new introduction. ' A work of literary art which uses the language in a new way or for a new purpose, does not call for many words from the introducer. All that one can say amounts only to pointing towards the book, and affirming its importance and permanence as a work of art. . Here is a book about the experiences of one soldier in the War of 1914-18. It is also a book about War, and about many other things also, such as Roman Britain, the Arthurian Legend, and divers matters which are given association by the mind of the writer. And as for the writer himself, he is a Londoner of Welsh and English descent. He is decidedly a Briton. He is also a Roman Catholic, and he is a painter who has painted some beautiful pictures and designed some beautiful lettering. All these facts about him are important. Some of them appear in his own preface to this book; some the reader may discover in the course of reading.'.

Marian was the elder sister of T. S. Eliot, and the book is dedicated "To My Children". T. S. Eliot wrote the introduction to the book and helped arrange for its publication. An educator, social reformer, and a published writer of essays and poems, Charlotte Champe Stearns Eliot (1843-1929) never fulfilled her own literary ambitions, but encouraged Eliot in his. She wrote to her son while he was still at Harvard: "I hope in your literary work you will receive early the recognition I strove for and failed. I should so have loved a college course, but was obliged to teach before I was nineteen. 'a young lady of unusual brilliancy as a scholar' my old yellow testimonial says, but when I was set to teaching young children, my Trigonometry and Astronomy counted for naught, and I made a dead failure" (Letters Vol I, 2011, p. 11). Auden, who considered it "a masterpiece" in which Jones did "for the British and Germans what Homer did for the Greeks and the Trojans".
