LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ The historic Golden Jubilee Indianapolis 500 race of May 30th 1966 was spectacular in every sense of the word. Billed by the American organizers as Britain's Bash At The 'Brickyard'. English rookie Graham Hill would go on to claim victory at the 50th Anniversary race driving the #24 Lola-Ford T90, often referred to as the Red Ball Special. Hill was actually a late replacement for principal driver Walt Hansgen and won the race as a rookie for the John Mecom Jr. Racing Team, finishing ahead of second placed Jim Clark. For the first time ever the entire event was beamed live from the Brickyard into cinemas across the UK. Graham Hill would go on to make history as the only race driver to ever win the famous "Triple Crown" of Motorsport - winning the Indy 500, the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rank published a special theatre program to accompany the historic event and also publicized the race in selected cinema foyers. This LOT comprises TWO ORIGINAL ITEMS FROM THE FIRST INSTALLMENT OF GRAHAM HILL'S HISTORIC TRIPLE CROWN. THIS IS A FEAT ONLY HILL HAS EVER ACHIEVED, MAKING THESE ITEMS ALL THE MORE HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT. 1) The original UK ONLY Theatre/Race program, accompanied by 2) An original UK ONLY Lobby Card from the Odeon Cinema UK - Ideal for framing BIOGRAPHY Race Statistics Winner: Graham Hill (Lola-Ford T90) Pole Sitter: Mario Andretti (165.889 mph) Starters: 33 Finishers: 7 (Fewest in Indy history) Laps Led: Jackie Stewart (40), Lloyd Ruby (68), Graham Hill (10) The "Greatest" First-Lap Crash: Immediately after the green flag, a massive accident involved 16 cars (nearly half the field). 11 cars were eliminated instantly. A.J. Foyt famously escaped by scaling the catch fence, injuring his hand in the process. Fewest Finishers Ever: Due to the initial crash and subsequent mechanical failures, only seven cars were running at the end of the race - the fewest in Indy 500 history. Graham Hill's Rookie Victory: Graham Hill won in his very first attempt. He became the first rookie winner since 1927 and remains the only driver to complete the Triple Crown of Motorsport (winning the Indy 500, Monaco Grand Prix, and 24 Hours of Le Mans). Jackie Stewart's Heartbreak: Rookie Jackie Stewart dominated the second half, leading by over a lap. With only 8-10 laps remaining, a broken oil scavenge pump forced him to retire while leading. Lobby card published on a medium board stock, generally in good condition with SOME VISIBLE WEAR AND TEAR FRONT AND REAR including creasing, light folds, bumps, surface scuffs, discoloration, damp, abundant foxing recto and verso hence SOLD AS SEEN, nevertheless an extremely rare Indianapolis 500, 50th Anniversary document and the very first win in what would become Graham Hill's unique "Triple Crown". A perfect item for framing. Race Program (12 pages) still in good condition with light discoloration and an occasional superficial bump or scuff.

Flexible metallic silver covers, laurel wreath logo at upper right corner front cover (minor shelfwear, slight creasing), still VG copy, from the library of Gene Sherman (1944-2007) famed southern California auto designer and builder, renowned metal fabricator, automobile restoration specialist, worked at the Briggs Cunningham Automobile Museum until it closed, and later opened a studio in Huntington Beach, CA. First edition of this exceedingly scarce promotional catalogue from Art Sparks, whose introduction details the efforts to radically compete with the new-found supremacy of the Lotus-Ford race cars, and in conjunction with Douglas Aircraft and Sparks engines design a competitive car. In 1966, the USAC regulations required Indianapolis race cars to feature open-wheel design with maximum width of 75 in. and minimum wheelbase of 96 in., and 4.2 litre engines with 2.8 litre superchargers. The legendary innovator applied his famed ForgedTrue pistons, which when used in other engines powered 11 consecutive Indianapolis 500 race winners. Sparks (1901-1987) was a pioneering silent movie and talkie professional driver stuntman (including Howard Hughes' epic Hells Angels), raced on outlaw dirt tracks, and began competing with Stubby Stubblefield, Bill Cummins, and Rex Mays on West Coast Tracks. He designed Stubby's "The Catfish" aerodynamic race car which placed 6th in the 1932 Indy 500, and later began working with Thorne Engineering to develop George Robson's 1946 Indy 500 winner. Neat and tidy history of a brief period in American car racing.Jesse Ebb Rose (February 27, 1925, Houston, Texas ? August 27, 2007) was an American racecar driver. Rose raced in the USAC Championship Car series in the 1961?1963 seasons, with 4 career starts, including the 1961?1963 Indianapolis 500 races. His best finish at Indy was in 14th position in both 1962 and 1963. Rose was racing against some of the biggest names in racing history; Parnelli Jones, Bobby Unser and A. J. Foyt. There is one whole page of telegrams sent to Rose congratulating him on making the finals. Much of the later part of the album are about the fund raising efforts on the3 part of Jim Hurtubise, a fellow speedster who suffered terrible injuries at a big race in Milwaulkee in 1964 Rose headed and ran the Jim Hurtubise Rehabilitation Fund. Included is a large quarto entitled "Jim Hurtubise Rehabilitation Fund Gala". This is an 8-page brochure for the Gala held at the Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel in Houston on August 12, 1964. It is mainly filled with photographic illustrations of racers in their cars. They raised 9$400 for Jim Hurtubise, a sizable sum in 1964.

Signed Letter. This letter is on Champion Spark Plug 100 Mile-An-Hour Club letterhead, dated April 7th, 1939. The letter is addressed to Larry Dunham of Automotive Gear Works in Richmond, Indiana. In the letter Horn complains that the recent gear ring he purchased was not cut correctly. Horn hopes that Automotive Gear Works will make it right and he will see them at the Indianapolis 500 race in May of 1939. Ted Horn would place 4th in the 1939 Indianapolis 500 Race and won the race in 1947. From 1935-1948, Ted Horn has the best 10-Year streak of finishes in Indianapolis 500 History, a record which has not been surpassed. He died at the age of 38 in 1948, after a serious accident while racing.
