A remarkable work indeed, and one to be distinguished from many contemporary 19th-century linguistic studies as it was conceived, researched, and published by Chief Joseph Laurent (Sozap Lolô) of the Odanak reserve. Rather than an external observation or study of the language, it is notable for being a self-determined effort to preserve Abenaki syntax, phonology, and place-names. Abenakis or Abnaki is an endangered Algonquin language spoken by various Indigenous peoples throughout regions of Quebec, New Brunswick as well as several of the New England States. Two distinct forms of the language are spoken, chiefly divided by geographic region, Western and Eastern. It has historically been spoken by the Algonquin of Northern Quebec, Mi'kmaq of the Maritimes, Maliseet of Northern Quebec and New Brunswick, The Passamaquoddy and Penobscot of Maine and New Brunswick. From the preface by Chief Laurent: "The primary intention, the chief aim of the Editor in publishing this book, is to aid the young generation of the Abenakis strive in learning English. It is also intended to preserve the uncultivated Abenakis language from the gradual alterations which are continually occuring from want, of course, of some proper work showing the grammatical principles upon which it is dependant.May this little volume, which will learn the white man how the Abenakis vocal organs express God's attributes, the names of the various objects of the creation: beasts, birds, fishes, trees, fruits, etc., etc., and how extended are the modifications of the Abenakis verb, be welcomed by the white as well as the red man, and its errors and defects overlooked with indulgence.".

White matte border, measures 14" x 11". Rippling along lower edge of matte, fading to the "USN" in the Nimitz signature, lightly bumped corners. The photograph is inscribed along th…e bottom quarter of the matte: "To Colonel and Mrs. J. L. Tookey, with best wishes and warm regards - BEKANAGE - Ottawa Chief - Sometimes known as C.W. Nimitz / Fleet Admiral, USN." On October 16, 1947, Fleet Admiral Nimitz was made an honorary Chief by the Ottawa Indian Foundation of Michigan at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. He was given a native headdress by Chef Fred Ettawagaski and smoked a peace pipe. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz (1885-1966) was the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during WWII. On September 2, 1945, he was the United States signatory to the surrender terms of Japanese forces, aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. After WWII, he served two years as Chief of Naval Operations. He retired from active service in 1947 and moved to California. Admiral Nimitz died in 1966 and was buried at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California. Inscribed photograph of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz at the Mayflower Hotel, being made an honorary Chief by the Ottawa Indian Foundation of Michigan. He was given the honorary name of "Be-lea-nage," meaning "The Winner." (ilustrador). Signed.
