A most fascinating and unique copy being the author's manuscript corrected copy for the second edition, printed on a thin proof paper. Presentation from Sir James to Annie Emerson, dated 1860 on verso of frontispiece & signed by Miss Emerson on half title. At the foot of the page of part one it has proof 22/11/59 and the signature of Sir J. E. Tennent. It is heavily corrected throughout in ink. Proof copy is written at the bottom of the page throughout the work. Volume two has exactly the same presentation as volume one. The book is also signed by Arbuthnot Emerson and dated 1878. The illustrations are of poorer quality than usual being proofs and in some cases are not included just having the title in manuscript. A truly unique family copy. The book is bound in the usual full green cloth with gilt illustration on upper cover, top corners slightly bumped and some rubbing to gilt decoration and cloth.
