This copy warmly inscribed by him to author Henry Harrisse, twice, on the front wrapper, and then again on the half-title; Harrisse has added a note of his own at the bottom of this page. 60 illustrations by Durand. Many of Henry Harisse's early writings are devoted to Renan. He mingled in French literary circles where he met, and formed a close friendship with, George Sand, among others. A superb association copy.

RARE, fully illustrated Report over ten pages recording the mining disaster (flooding) and subsequent rescue at the colliery at Troedyrhiw, north of Pontyridd, Wales. Includes nine portraits of some of the "rescuers and sufferers", full page diagrammatic cross-section of the colliery's stalls and cutting, carrying the rescued miners from the pit mouth, miners in a tram car, a general view of the district, plan of the mine workings and two very large double page spreads: one of the underground removal of a collier from the flooded 'stall' and the other a touching scene in hospital with the miners' families following the rescue. An important historical document, superior to that published by the Illustrated London News. Three large pages of text explain the full details of the tragedy and the heroic rescue attempts, 92 yards deep. Fourteen men and boys were originally recorded as missing. The rescue attempts were of nationwide interest and incredibly, some men were finally rescued after nine days underground after being reduced to eat their candle wax. Three men and two boys died. Isaac Pride, John Howell and Daniel Thomas played a particularly outstanding part in the rescue plan. A gathering of 14, large unbound pages (7 leaves, approximately 30cm by 40cm) are provided, ten of them concerned with the event. The other unrelated text and pictures are included to maintain the integrity of a double-page spread. Overall, near fine condition with a little thumbing to margins and tiny creased corners.
