With regard to 'lectures on the Friendly Societies', he thinks Daniell would be 'very well qualified to deliver some; but I don't think it would do for the Government to employ any one for the purpose'. He suggests he try to make 'private arrangements with some of the Literary and Philanthropic Societies', to some of which 'Ludlow' might be able to introduce him.

It took its name from the Grillions Hotel where members met from 1813. A resolution passed in 1826 established the tradition of commissioning an engraved portrait of each member. A number of the original drawings are at Killerton House, near Exeter.
