ORIGINAL SIGNED LIMITED EDITION POSTER BY IBRAM LASSAW FOR AN EAST HAMPTON EXHIBITION - An original 29 inch high by 23 inch wide poster designed by the Russian-American sculptor and artist Ibram Lassaw for the "Ashawagh Hall Aug 2 thru 17, 1975 / The Springs…Artists Exhibition" in East Hamptom, New York. Titled in black along the top, the abstract black, pink & red image depicts a jagged construction reminiscent of a jigsaw puzzle piece. Lithographed on a white background, the poster is signed in full "Ibram Lassaw" in pencil above his printed signature. The poster is further numbered "19/50" in pencil at bottom left. The bottom edge of the poster is slightly darkened. Near fine. Limited edition of 50 numbered copies, signed in pencil by the artist. The Russian-American sculptor and artist Ibram Lassaw (1913-2003) was born in Egypt. His parents, who were Russian emigrees living in Egypt, moved to the U.S. and settled in Brooklyn, NY. A student at the Clay Club and New York's Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, he was influenced by Kandinsky, Arp, and others. He soon followed his abstract paintings and drawings with sculptural works. His open-space constructions were created through welding. He worked for the Public Works of Art Project in the mid-30's and joined the WPA as a teacher and sculptor before serving in the army during the war. He promoted modernist styles and influenced the growth of abstract art in the U.S. One of its founding members, he served as president of the American Abstract Artists organization from 1946 to 49. He, along with other artists such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem de Kooning and many more, spent his summers on the south fork of Long Island, moving there permanently in 1963.
