Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original Ottoman illustrated journal. 40x27 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 8 p., richly ills. Taken from a volume. Foxing on pages, slightly chipped on hinges. Overall a very good copy. Extremely rare early issue of an Ottoman illustrated journal depicting a lynching of colored American citizens in Florida by white Americans, published one year after the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey. The first studies bearing social criticism on issues like slavery and abolition were made in the early years of the young Turkish Republic, which had refused the legacy of its imperial predecessor. In this period, several classics of American anti-slavery literature and contemporary works were translated for the first time, and texts on slavery and abolition in America were translated and published in Turkey. The term "Lynch's Law" apparently originated during the American Revolution when Patriot Charles Lynch (1736-1796), a Virginia justice of the peace, ordered extralegal punishment of the Loyalists. Variations of the term, such as "lynch law," "judge lynch," and "lynching", were standard entries in American and British English dictionaries by the 1850s. In 1811, a man named Captain William Lynch claimed that the phrase, already famous, actually came from a 1780 compact signed between him and his neighbors in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to uphold their own brand of law independent of legal authority. In the pre-Civil War South, members of the abolitionist movement and other people opposing slavery were sometimes targets of lynch mob violence. (Source: Wikipedia).

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Original wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 13 p., a b/w picture shows John D. Rockefeller sitting and reading a newspaper on the front cover, and three unnumbered b/w ills. Chipped on spine and a small tear on the back cover. Otherwise a good copy. First and only edition of this rare biography of any member of the Rockefeller family in the Middle East. This exceedingly rare booklet (only three institutional paper copies) contains a brief biography of John Davison Rockefeller Sr., (1839-1937), known as an American philanthropist and the richest man in the world of his time. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series] consists of about 41 small books. They were all published in the same year (1927) by a delegation under the presidency of Gövsa and some of them were written by him personally. This series was groundbreaking since biography was not a much-explored genre in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. Ibrahim Alaeddin Gövsa was an Ottoman / Turkish writer, educator, and poet who is known for his biographic and encyclopedic studies. Özege 17040.; Three paper copies in OCLC: 460160558 & 79161461.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Original newspaper with illustrated covers. Tabloid size: 40 x 28 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 8 p., b/w ills. Wear to spine, taken from a volume, chippings on extremities, slight foxing and fading on pages and covers. Overall, a good but fragile copy. A scarce late Republic-period issue of an illustrated newspaper in Ottoman Turkish, featuring an attractive illustrated cover depicting the collision of the French steamer SS Lotus and the Turkish steamer SS Bozkurt on 2 August 1926, north of Mytilene in the Aegean Archipelago. The issue includes a brief and early account of the case, based on the estimates and descriptions of experts in court. The cover illustration is reproduced from an original watercolor created exclusively for this newspaper by Ottoman painter Ali Cemal Benim (1881-1939). Ali Cemal Benim graduated from the Naval Academy in 1901 and the Fine Arts Academy in 1903. He painted in still lifes, landscapes, and battle scenes at the ?i?li Painting Studio (?i?li Atölyesi), which was founded by then Minister of War Enver Pasha for the Vienna and Berlin Exhibitions in 1917. Ali Cemal, who participated in the 1918 Vienna Exhibition and also created wall paintings and posters, later pursued a career in journalism, working as an illustrator for various newspapers and magazines. "Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series], consisting of about 41 small books, all of which were published in 1927, by a delegation under the presidency of the body and some of which were written by him personally, filled an important gap on 'biography' field in its period. Gövsa was an Ottoman / Turkish writer and poet who is known for his biography and encyclopedia studies. Extremely rare. Özege 3636.; Not in OCLC.
