London & .c Actually Survey'd dazzles with its flamboyant use of text as well as image which in places threaten to overwhelm the map. The difference between the two maps can only fully be understood in the context of the very different political situations prevailing at the times of their publications--Peter Barker.

Unfortunately, here we have only this single volume, covering the letters N through R. Based on the author's statement in the preface, it appears to be one of the very few copies he made, as the first edition was: ''reproduced less times than Beren Camlost has fingers'' (Beren Camlost lost one of his hands). The glossary is presented as a compilation of morphological elements in the languages of Middle-earth, together with volume and page number where related information (such as language, root source, part of speech, translation, contextual information, and related words and derivations) are documented in the following works of J.R.R. Tolkien: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Book of Lost Tales, The Lays of Beleriand, The Shaping of Middle-earth, The Lost Road, The Return of the Shadow, The Road goes Ever On, The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics, and ''Guide to Names'' in A Tolkien Compass. Paul Nolan Hyde (1942-2021) was a professor of linguistics at Brigham Young University and a specialist in the Tolkien Legendarium. He authored Quenti Lambardillion, the Middle-earth linguistics column in the journal Mythlore between 1982 and 1992, and also contributed to Vinyar Tengwar, the journal of the Elvish Linguistic Fellowship.
