Biographical Notice (from Dugald Stewart), Advertisement to the Sixth Edition, Essays by Adam Smith on Philosophical Subjects: Advertisement by the Editors (Black and Hutton), Detailed Table of Contents, [iv], [1], 2-473 pages, followed by 3 pages publisher's ads. The original maroon cloth is faded at the edges, with 'Murray's Reprint' in blind on both boards; corners and spine ends worn, with some loss, and a 3/4 inch split at the upper rear joint. The gilt lettering of author and title ('Essays /Moral /Sentiments /Logic /Metaphysics /External /Senses) is still discernible on the sunned spine; the publishers name at the base is partially chipped away. Ex-library copy: blind-stamp on the title page, and on page 25; "discarded" stamp also on title page, on page 11 and rear pastedown. The interior has yellow endpapers; however, the front free endpaper is missing, and the rear shows old library markings. Binding is strong, though a few pages opened roughly. Except for five brown spots on early pages, the rest are remarkably clean. Only the title page shows age-spotting. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] From the editors' Advertisement---"the greater number of [these essays] appeared to be parts of a plan for giving a connected history of the liberal sciences and elegant arts. It is long since [the author] found it necessary to abandon that plan as far too extensive; and these parts of it lay beside him neglected until his death. His friends are persuaded, however, that the reader will find in them that happy connection, . . . and that though it is difficult to add much to the great fame he so justly acquired by his other writings, these will be read with satisfaction and pleasure." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage.
