Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. The first edition of the first printed history of Wales and an important source in the history of Welsh historiography. Title within elaborate woodcut strapwork border (dated in manuscript), woodcut portraits, armorial shields, initials and head-and-tailpieces, eighteenth century annotations and scoring, inscription of Richard Thomas, 1775 at head of dedication, a few leaves towards end with shaved headlines, occasional water stains, small ink stains and light soiling, front endpaper detached, bookplate, later blindstamped calf, spine faded, a little rubbed, armorial book stamp to fpd, boards with gilt turn ins, marbled text block edges. In the 1580s, Sir Henry Sydney, lord president of Wales asked the antiquary David Powel to prepare an English edition of Caradoc's medieval history based on a translation by Humphrey Llwyd. It was the source of the legend of the discovery of America by the Welsh prince Madoc ap Owen about 1170, which for 'centuries spawned countless tales of encounters with Welsh Indians on the American frontier' (ODNB).
