Concentration distributions of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in sediments taken in the Oyster Grounds. Average concentrations in fine fraction (<63 _m) of the sediments of Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn were 0.14, 21.8, 0.23, 49.2, and 118 _g?g_1, respectively. Average _PAH concentration was 1.82 _g?g_1. Vertical gradients within the sediment cores varied for all compounds and did not exhibit any one particular trend, probably because of bioturbation and extensive fishery in this highly productive area. A highly significant north to south trend appeared for Cd: average values increased from 0.06 _g?g_1 in the northern part to 0.42 _g?g_1 in the southern. Most of the PAHs showed an opposite gradient: average _PAH values decreased from 2.53 _g?g_1 in the north to 1.24 _g?g_1 in the southern part of the Oyster Grounds. Heavy-metal levels in Oyster Ground sediments were 5 to 10 times lower than in other North Sea sedimentation areas (e.g. the Wadden Sea and the German Bight) and in the river Rhine. The yearly sediment deposition in the muddy part of the Oyster Grounds was used to calculate the yearly load of the various heavy metals and PAHs. It was estimated that less than 0.03 to 0.3% of the total heavy-metal input to the North Sea reaches the sediments of the Oyster Grounds. 5 pp., 4 figs, gr. 8. …

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed report on the pyrite deposits of Georgia, providing valuable insights for geologists, miners, and historians. The author, an experienced geologist, unearthed these deposits during a period of increased demand for pyrite in 1917. The report serves as a comprehensive guide to Georgia's pyrite resources, discussing their types, distribution, and economic significance. It explores the historical context of pyrite mining in the state, tracing its evolution from the gold rush era to the present day. The author's meticulous examination of the geological formations and associated minerals sheds light on the genesis of these deposits, revealing the complex interplay between igneous intrusions and metamorphic processes. The book concludes by emphasizing the importance of these pyrite deposits, not only as a source of sulfur for industries such as fertilizer and explosives production, but also as a testament to Georgia's rich geological heritage. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Atlanta, tall octavo (10 by 7 inches), variously paged, with numerous plates, maps and text figures. ***CONTENT: These scarce Georgia volumes mostly deal with the mineral resources of the State. One important volume describes the "mineral springs", including the Warm Springs Resort, in Meriwether County, made famous when purchased by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1927 for physical therapy. Volumes in this set include: Bulletin 20 (1913) - MINERAL SPRINGS OF GEORGIA, with 190 p., 25 plates and map; Bulletin 29 (1914) - ASBESTOS, TALC, AND SOAPSTONE DEPOSITS OF GEORGIA, with 319 p., 21 plates and map; Bulletin 30 (1915) - FELDSPAR AND MICA DEPOSITS, AND GEORGIA PEGMATITES, with 190 p., 9 plates and map; Bulletin 36 (1920) - BARYTES DEPOSITS OF GEORGIA, with 146 pp., 11 plates and 4 maps; Bulletin 39 (1922) - HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF GEORGIA, with 154 p. and 7 plates; Bulletin 41 (1924) - IRON ORE DEPOSITS OF GEORGIA, with 222 p. and 10 plates; Bulletin 42 (1925) - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF GEORGIA, with 189 p. and 43 plates; and Bulletin 43 (1928) - GEOLOGY OF THE TATE QUADRANGLE, GEORGIA, with 170 p., 22 plates and 2 maps. Many text figures in these volumes are actually maps. ***CONDITION: The seven hardcover volumes are complete, NEAR-FINE, and bound in the original decorated brick-red cloth, with gilt lettering on the backstrips. The covers are very well preserved and show only a trace of wear to the extremities. Backstrip lettering typically bold and bright. Joints and hinges solid, bindings firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright. Most of these volumes were deaccessioned from a New England library and have shelf labels on the lower spines, and small stamps on preliminary pages. Bulletin 39 and the other softcover reports are VG in the original printed-paper wrappers. The hardcover volumes are particularly handsome and contain a wealth of valuable information on Georgia geology. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. …
