Large Size Book. What if the South had won the Civil War? What if the North had been reduced to an impoverished, unreconstructed wasteland called the Industrial Zone? And what if the two corpses found in the ruins of the decaying former national capital at Washington- their fingers sheared off, bullets through their brains- were not just random victims of violence but the beginning of a chain of events that would threaten to overturn 135 years of history? Set in a very near future that might have been, this provocative, "sophisticated thriller creates an America where separate but equal" is the bedrock of both law and society. The lily-white Senate and the all-black House may argue, but there's one issue on which everyone can agree: to love someone of the opposite race is to court disaster-and to act on that love is to declare yourself a noncitizen, unworthy of the land of your birth. But as easygoing President Spencer Jefferson Lee, scion of the Confederacy's two most famous families, and his distinguished black vice president are about to learn, passion is more powerful than policy, and nothing is ever as simple as black or white. Idealism will lead the vice president's son to a terrorist group led by a mixed-race woman who will become both his teacher and jailer, both his substitute mother and bedmate. And love will lead the president's son and vice president's daughter to a precipice from which it seems there is no turning back. As their children undertake their journeys of discovery, the president and vice president are drawn into a deadly web that threatens everything they love most: their country, their children, their deepest needs and most cherished ideals. When the day of reckoning arrives, Spenser Lee confronts a choice that will decide the fate of every man and woman in the land he has sworn to serve.

XX [From the dust jacket flaps] JOURNEY THROUGH TEXAS, first published in 1857, is the account of a tour of Texas and Louisiana that Frederick Law Olmsted and his brother Dr. John Olmsted took in the winter and spring of 1853-54. Frederick's doctor-brother came to Texas in the hope 'that his tuberculosis would be cleared up by the clean air and warm temperature of the prairie West. (Unfortunately, it wasn't helped much.) For Frederick Olmsted himself, it was the second major phase of his indefatigable travels in the slave South of the middle 1850's. These comprehensive Southern travels were to yield more immediately a hefty bundle of dispatches to New York newspapers (the New York Times in particular) and more ultimately a trilogy on the slave South that he entitled "Our Slave States." Journey through Texas is the second panel of the trilogy, standing between JOURNEY IN THE SEABOARD SLAVE STATES and JOURNEY IN THE BACK COUNTRY. Frederick Olmsted had an agreement with Henry J. Raymond of the New York Daily Times to send back letters to the new-founded Times recording his experiences on the trip to and across Texas. Writing of his Southwestern travels was a continuation of the assignment Olmsted had had of reporting to the Times of New York his observations as a Northern traveler in the slave South. As a result of his Texas visit, a series of fifteen articles or letters bearing the label "A Tour in the Southwest" (or "Letters from the Southwest") appeared from time to time in the columns of the Times between March 6th and June 7th of 1854. These dispatches were signed "Yeoman," the pen-name that Olmsted had previously used for his newspaper reports on the slavery-ridden South. Then almost exactly three years later, in the winter of 1856-57, Olmsted's brother Dr. John Olmsted expanded, altered, and otherwise materially changed these paper letters into a book, JOURNEY THROUGH TEXAS. Professor Howard of Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, in his edition has shortened somewhat the text of the first edition (1857) of Olmsted's Texas journal. He has written an "After-Word" section to supplement Olmsted's own brief introduction of his book. Professor Howard is professor of American history at Del Mar College. His career has included teaching stints at Texas A. & M, College, the University of Texas, and Southwest Texas State College. He is the recipient of a Ph.D. degree from Harvard in American Studies.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. This book is a comprehensive volume dedicated to dermal absorption and decontamination. Given risks including chemical warfare and accidents with toxic industrial chemicals, studies involving dermal absorption and decontamination are of the utmost importance. Each chapter consists of a systematic review on an important dermal absorption and/or decontamination topic. Chapters address key issues such as the general acceptance of water/ soap and water as the gold standard of dermal decontamination despite the fact that it commonly provides incomplete decontamination and may even result in a wash-in effect (an increased penetration of contaminant). Decontamination with other substances (e.g. RSDL) is explored, and factors that affect dermal penetration (e.g. anatomical variation) are summarized. All systematic reviews are comprehensive and up-to-date. Dermal Absorption and Decontamination will be useful for many fields and disciplines. Firstly, information on dermal decontamination may be used by governments for military and national defense purposes in the event of chemical warfare. Additionally, this information would be of use to many production companies, whose employees are at risk of an accident with toxic industrial chemicals. Topics covered in the book will also be of use to pharmaceutical companies, especially those exploring transdermal delivery of drugs and is of great relevance to those in the medical field, particularly dermatologists. This book is a comprehensive volume dedicated to dermal absorption and decontamination. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
