His best known oils, such as Nighthawks, Early Sunday Morning, and House by a Railroad, are powerful psychological statements that convey a sense of angst and alienation. Yet there is another Hopper we know less well: the freer, more spontaneous spirit that emerges in his watercolors. In 1923 he spent a summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and began painting houses, landscapes, and fishing boats. In them he captures remnants of nineteenth-century America that for him symbolized the fundamental character of the country's people and places, and prompted him to reexamine his views about the relationship between the past and the modern.".

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Edward Hopper Ilustrador. First Edition. 2004. 256pp. "More than any other artist, Edward Hopper (1882-1967) made the visual iconography of the American city his own. All-night diners, filling stations, motel rooms and office interiors take on the foreboding atmosphere of abandoned stage sets, onto which his isolated human protagonists seem to have wandered. Although rooted in twentieth-century America, his images have a timeless quality that has struck a chord with a huge international audience. In this major catalogue, Hopper's relationship with film and theatre is explored, along with his fascination with architecture, advertising, travel and popular culture. The receptions his paintings have received from artists, critics and a wider public are examined, and the sense of melancholy that characterises much of his work is placed in a historical tradition reaching back to Dürer. Fully illustrated in colour, with oils, etchings, drawings and watercolours from throughout his career, and with essays by leading authorities on American art, this is a comprehensive and engaging survey of one of the iconic artists of the twentieth century." The book and unclipped dust jacket are both in excellent condition. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy book so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

The story of the Scribner's work, which was important to Hopper, is recounted by Gail Levin: "Fame fostered Hopper's career in illustration. In September 1918, he began to sell to Scribner's, a cut above his usual clients. Walter TIttle claimed credit for the first assignment: 'I succeeded in getting him a bit of work from Scribner's magazine almost by brow-beating my old friend [Joseph Hawley] Chapin [the art editor], insisting that here was a man really too good for him.' Hopper's wife came on the scene to observe: 'Scribner's were wonderful to him, let him go his own gait, careful not to give him things not his kind to do.' His kind: te first story they gave him to read was 'The hearing ear', by Henry Van Dyke, which dealt with heroic rescue in the war. The two drawings, which appeared in the issue of December 1918, added one hundred dollars to Edward's books." ; Dark blue (C183)--calico grain cloth; gilt lettering framed by gold, with red and white lily designs; flower motif repeated on spine in gilt; partially untrimmed ; Trade edition issued in dark blue cloth ; foxing ; name on front endpaper ; scarce Hopper source ; VG.
