No Binding. Condición: Very Good. Original copper-engraved map. 8vo. (14 x 10 cm). In Latin. Original 17th century hand-coloured copperplate engraved miniature map of Borneo, the largest of the Malay-Indonesian archipelago with the islands surrounding such as Batacuam, St. Michael, St. Maria, Paolo Tigao, etc., taken from Bertius' "Tabulæ Geographicæ Contractæ" in the early 17th century. The map features a decorative title cartouche with the map's scale ("Duytse mijlen"). At the beginning of the 17th century, the Netherlands, as a major hub of overseas trade, held a strategically important position in Asia. In this context, mapping islands like Borneo was vital for monitoring trade routes and identifying key locations for settlement and commerce. The Dutch East India Company (VOC), driven by its interest in Asia's valuable natural resources, relied on such maps for both economic and colonial purposes. Additionally, while the British began trading with Sambas in southern Borneo in 1609, the Dutch only initiated their trade in the region in 1644. Consequently, the creation of maps of Borneo became an essential tool for documenting regional trade and advancing geographical exploration. Bertius was a Flemish philosopher, theologian, historian, geographer and cartographer. In 1618 Bertius was given an appointment as a cosmographer to the court of Louis XIII. His career in cartography had started in 1598, with the publication of a Latin edition of a miniature atlas Caert Thresoor by Barent Langenes, which he translated as Tabulae contractae (1600). Jodocus Hondius Jr. [Joost d'Hondt] (1563-1612) was born at Wakken (Flanders). Amid the turmoil of war, he relocated to London in 1584, where he established himself as an engraver, instrument-maker, and mapmaker. In 1587, he married Coletta van den Keere, the sister of the renowned engraver Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius). A few years earlier, his own sister, Jacomina, had wed Pieter van den Berghe (Petrus Montanus). Now using the Latinized form of his name, Jodocus Hondius collaborated closely with his two brothers-in-law. By 1593, the political climate in the Northern Netherlands had shifted in a way that made it favourable for Jodocus to settle in Amsterdam, where many Antwerp-based printers, publishers, and engravers had already relocated. In this emerging hub of cartography, he established his workshop, "In de Wackere Hondt" (The Vigilant Dog), a name referencing both his birthplace and surname. There, he produced numerous maps, published atlases, and continued significant works, including his expansion of Gerard Mercator's Atlas.…
