First cover bears a red leather label on top left with a gilt location number, 99; marble endpapers. On blank leaf with wide watermark, illustrated frontispiece with etched title inside an aedicule; 1 etched illustration of a Latin verse topped with an eclipse and surrounded by floral motif as background of the rest of the universe. 49 numbered out of text pen illustrations, burin engraved, of half-bust portraits each captioned with the name of the person and some Latin verse and bearing the monogram of the artist "H" or "Hh". The beautiful portraits depict figures of the Protestant Reform and other historical figures like Erasmus and Savonarola. Extremely scarce collection, perfectly complete in our copy, absent from auction catalogs in the last 40 years it is preserved in only 4 libraries as per Worldcat records. Magnificent copy, with fresh etchings and for the very wide margins (from 2 to 4 cm at sides; up to 7 cm for the bottom margin). Carta geografica originale (cm. 54,5x38 più margini bianchi). Splendida coloritura coeva all'acquarello. Testo in lingua latina al verso. Esemplare in eccellente stato di conservazione. Primo stato di quattro. Molto rara. Splendido mappamondo in due emisferi opera di uno dei più celebri cartografi di tutti i tempi, icona dell'epoca d'oro della cartografia olandese. La carta è decorata nei quattro angoli con i ritratti di Tolomeo, Hondius, Mercator e Giulio Cesare. Nella parte superiore è presente il globo celeste abbellito con festoni mentre, nella parte inferiore, la figura allegorica dell'Europa riceve doni dall'Africa, dall'Asia e dall'America, rappresentazione che riflette il dominio delle potenze marittime europee all'epoca. Ai lati sono raffigurati come di consueto i quatto elementi, Fuoco, Aria, Terra e Acqua. Nei due emisferi si possono notare inoltre tre piccoli pannelli, uno dei quali descrive la scoperta dell'America da parte di Cristoforo Colombo.Per i dettagli geografici Hondius seguì John Speed ed i suoi contemporanei e anch'egli presenta la California come un'isola. Le innovazioni riguardano in particolare la costa settentrionale dell'Australia che si estende verso la Nuova Guinea e un nuovo disegno del nord-est del Canada con l'Isola di Baffin (indicata come 'Queen Anne's forland') ora mostrata completamente circondata dal mare. In America meridionale, lo Stretto di Le Maire appare adesso ad est dello Stretto di Magellano. Va considerato che lo Stretto di Le Maire era stato scoperto solo quindici anni prima la pubblicazione di questa carta. Cfr. Shirley, 'The mapping of the world', n. 336.

An engraved view of the first round of executions of conspirators in the attempted assassination of the Dutch stadtholder, Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau, planned for 7 February 1623. The letterpress leaf originally mounted below the engraving contains a long verse in two columns associating the conspirators with satan and Prince Maurits with god, and below it three shorter verses in three columns in the voices of the Fatherland, the head of state (Maurits) and Justice. Prince Maurits and the Dutch Republic's greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, had worked together for twenty years and shared power in spite of differences in their style and views, but in the religious disputes between Protestant groups Oldenbarnevelt supported the moderate Remonstrants and Maurits the strictly Calvinist Counter-Remonstrants, and the strife expanded into a bitter dispute over the power of Church and State. The broadside nowhere mentions Hendrick Slatius, who had fled but was captured in March and executed on 23 May, so it may have been published before his execution. Oldenbarnevelt's younger son Willem escaped to Brussels with two other men. Hendrick Hondius's Hh monogram, with a note of the privilege for the publication, appears in the blast of wind coming out of the trumpet. Muller notes under his no. 1479 that of the many prints concerning this conspiracy, the two "triumfbazuinen" (1485 and 1486) are the rarest.With the letterpress title above the engraving in the upper leaf and the text of the psalm on either side cut away, as noted, and a second copy of the leaf with the letterpress poems extra added. Slight foxing at the foot of the text leaf. Tear in the lower left corner of the leaf with the engraving, not affecting the pictorial image. Slight wear along the fold of the text leaf. Otherwise in good conditionl Muller, Historieplaten 1486 ("very rare"); Orenstein 24. The leaf with the engraving lacking the letterpress heading with the title and the letterpress psalm in 2 columns that flanked the engraving. The two leaves have been separated and mounted on a paper support. With a second copy of the text leaf loosely inserted. Two separate leaves, one with the engraving (plate size 14 x 17.5 cm ) and the other with letterpress verses (set in textura gothic types), a woodcut decorated roman initial and a border built up from arabesque typographic ornaments (37 x 26.5 cm), originally assembled to form a single broadside.

Modern half-vellum, boards damaged, worn copy. 2°: pi2 A- C4, not paginated. With engraved title and 36 folding plates, mounted on paper in order to be able to see them next to the text. The 5th edition of 6, of which the first was published in 1622, followed by editions in 1625 (2x), 1647, ca. 1660 and ca 1750. The plates are the same in all editions. Among the illustrations a view of the gardens of the Prince of Orange in The Hague, and a landscape dated 1622, probably made by Simon Frisius. Other plates depict rooms, doorways, stairways, linen presses etcetera. In the present copy one, unnumbered plate is added, with the inscription 'punctum'. B038.

On the left background, in a niche on the wall is an owl; on the right, a window overlooking a landscape with trees, tree trunks, building with obelisk. Handwritten on the back: "Geschenk van A.J. Published in The Hague.[NL]Over het leven van Herri met de Bles is vrijwel niets bekend. Hij zou zijn bijnaam te danken hebben aan een witte vlek of lok in zijn haar (volgens Karel van Mander). Hij schijnt autodidact te zijn geweest. Hij stamde wellicht uit dezelfde plaats als Joachim Patinir, en hij nam diens schilderijen met landschappen tot voorbeeld.Herri met de Bles was voornamelijk werkzaam in Antwerpen. Zijn werk was geliefd in Italië en hij kreeg daar de naam Civetta (uil), omdat hij zijn schilderijen soms met een uiltje signeerde. Of hij zelf in Italië is geweest is niet zeker.
