Johann Lavater (1741-1801) was a Swiss poet, writer, philosopher, physiognomist and Reformed theologian. This is his best known publication, first published in German between 1775 and 1778. It introduced the idea that physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.

Boards have cracking to the front joint, bumping to corners, chipping to edges, and scuff marks throughout. Textblock has ink and pencil writing to the front matter, significant stains and foxing to some pages throughout, age toning, and wear.
