It is based on the real war experiences of Illinois soldiers, including his own in Company C, 12th Illinois Infantry and later on the staff of General McClellan and later Fitz-John Porter. Following the court-martial of Porter, he became embittered and resigned his commission. Kirkland's novel of the war came to represent Illinois' effort in the war. Unusual study on a relatively unexplored field of Civil War fiction written by the active soldiers. Other interesting articles in this journal include Lincolniana, Frank H.
