The second (?) edition./// Cardboard binding with coloured edges; hardback, [8]…+368 pp., 8° (11 x 17.5 cm), cover worn and rubbed, corners bumped and rubbed, edges faded, top edge slightly darkened, endpapers yellowed, front endpaper partly peeled off from board, it has (very old) notes written with pen, back endpaper has small stamp of second-hand bookshop, title page worn, yellowed and slightly rubbed, pages yellowed, ca. 10 leaves have minor water stain along fore edge, other signs of wear and age are very rare (tiny chips, folded corners etc.), condition: good Book Language/s: German.

Friedrich Hoffmann (1660-1742) "describes the preparation of ether, which he calls adidum vitroli vinosum as a better name than spiritum vini vitriolatum, and gives a h…istory of the substance. He regarded alcohol as mainly a compound of water and oil, with some acid. Sulphuric acid removes the water and leaves the oil in the form of ether, although the latter might contain some vitrolic particles (ab omni partium vitriolicarum immixtione non sit penitus immune). A mixture of alcohol and ether was long used in medicine as liquor anodynus minerali Hoffmanni, or 'Hoffmann's drops' . this is given as a dissertation of Carl Hoffmann." Enthalten sind auch Epigramme auf deutsche Sprichwörter wie "Unter-Röcke sind Appetit-Röcke" oder "Wer hängen soll, der ersäufft nicht". - Gering gebräunt und wenig fleckig, am Ende 20 weiße Blätter beigebunden, vorderer Innendeckel mit kleiner Buchhändlermarke (Perez Junquera, Madrid). The Invention of the modern otoscope - nighteen years before Tröltsch (GM 3374)! Erste Ausgabe des Ohrenspiegels - 10 Jahre vor der Erfindung des Augen-Spiegels durch Helmholtz! Die Hals-Nasen-Ohrenheilku…nde konnte sich erst so spät zu einem eigenen Fach entwickeln, da die zu beobachtenden und zu behandelnden Organe in tiefen dunklen Körperhöhlen liegen; die dem bloßen menschlichen Auge nicht sichtbar sind. So bedurfte es erst der Erfindung eines perforierten Hohlspiegels durch Friedrich Hoffmann, 1841, mit dessen Hilfe die Beleuchtung dieser Organe möglich wurde. Friedrich Hofmann (1806-1886) Arzt, Geheimer Sanitätsrat, in Burgsteinfurt beschreibt seinen perforierten Hohlspiegel, der die Beleuchtungstechnik vor allem im HNO- und Augen-Bereich revolutioniert, aber auch bei der Urethroskopie verwendet wird (HAKEN, GRÜNFELD). Die Erfindung war einfach, er kratzte den spiegelnden Belag im Zentrum eines runden Toilettenspiegels ab und benutzte dieses Loch als Durchblick Die Bedeutung dieser Entdeckung wurde zuerst nicht erkannt und 1859 beschrieb v. Tröltsch den sogenannten Ohrenspiegel erneut. Seit dieser Zeit erfuhr er eine weite Verbreitung. -cf.
