Edward Topsell (1572-1625) was an Elizabethan clergyman famous for writing massive, legendary bestiaries packed with real animals and mythical beasts. He wrote a major manuscript on birds around 1613-1614, which was an English translation and alphabetical abridgment of Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi's Ornithologiae. However, Topsell never finished it before he died—it only covered birds starting with A, B, and C (stopping mid-way on page 250). The unique, 248-leaf manuscript sat hidden away in the Henry E.
