Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. First published in 1909, this is an undated edition of c. 1920 or slightly later (from other bibliographic sources and one of the illustrations is dated 1918). Pale brown illustrated covers (Mr Punch and his dog), no jacket as issued. Covers a little rubbed and worn at extremities, slight lean, some browning and dust staining to page block, some offsetting and spotting to endpapers, no price, no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 192pp, illustrated. The editor of this volume Sir John Alexander Hammerton (1871-1949), was a Scot principally known as an excyclopedist (he worked principally with Arthur Mee). 'Punch' was founded in 1841 by Henry Mayhew and wood engraver Ebenezer Landells, on an initial investment of £25. It was jointly edited by Mayhew and Mark Lemon. It was subtitled 'The London Charivari' in homage to Charles Philipon's French satirical humour magazine Le Charivari. Reflecting their satiric and humorous intent, the two editors took for their name and masthead the anarchic glove puppet Mr. Punch of Punch and Judy. Circulation broke the 100,000 mark around 1910 and peaked in 1948 at 184,000. Sales declined steadily thereafter. Ultimately, the magazine was forced to close in 2002 after 161 years of publication. A very funny series of golfing stories. Quite a scarce book. Covers by Hassall, illustrations by Phil May, George Du Maurier, L. Raven-Hill et al (ilustrador).…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. lii, 208 pp; frontispiece and 5 plates. Original cloth. Near Fine, in dust jacket. First Edition. Quoting from the front flap of the dust jacket: "Sir John Hill remains an obscure name, even to scholars whose field of interest is the cultural history, science, and literature of eighteenth-century England. . . . Botanist, geologist, apothecary, physician; actor, playwright, journalist; publisher, bookman, commercial and literary hack; friend or foe--depending upon the circumstance and moment--of Fielding, Garrick, Richardson, Gray, Smollett, Sterne, Johnson, Goldsmith, and dozens of other literary men; in scientific circles, friend or foe of Haller, Linnaeus, Peter Collinson, da Costa, and almost all the luminaries of the Royal Society at mid-century; ultimately Hill was, as one of the Georgian satirists represented him, 'lusus naturae,' one of the most controversial creatures of his age. But Hill's contribution in many fields is gradually being recognized, especially in botany, medicine, and belles lettres. In the vital area of cancer research, Hill's Cautions against the Immoderate Use of Snuff (1759) is now recognized as the first work to suggest an association of tobacco with cancer, and his brave attacks on the Royal Society are gradually being reinterpreted as healthy assaults based on a need for reform rather than as vendettas deriving from deep personal disappointment.".…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. A crude amateurish modern rebind with paper tape holding the title page to the first page and a similar arrangement at the end of the book. the adhesive does not seem to be a modern one so it would be possible to remove it to rebind the book. 8 plates. One page has a one inch piece torn from the bottom with the loss of two lines of text from one side (the other is a half blank page). Some of the plates have had their edges trimmed with no loss to the print- presumably because they were loose at some time and have been frayed- the maximum is half an inch or so but most are less than this- all would have been better left. There are some pencil crosses and a ink correction - the overall impression despite all these comments is that the book is internally clean.…
