In 1946 Penguin Books issued this First Issue of the "Penguin Music Magazine, a paperback-sized periodical with no advertising, but a healthy selection of articles and pictures about things musical, including operas, ballet, theater and classical composing. These early issues were e…dited by Ralph Hill. This is Number 4, issued in 1947. There is a nice selection of contemporary photographs arranged in a discrete section. The first photo section is a pictorial essay on the production of 78 rpm records. The photographs are fascinating. The second photo section is given over to ballet. Featured are The Ballet Rambert, Walter Gore, Sally Gilmour, and John Gilpin - among others. The written articles are quite varied, view the Contents page in the picture provided , or read the Table of contents below. England had just come out of the Second World War, and production materials, such as paper were still in short supply. The quality of paper reflects that. Because of this such publications are often fragile, and proper care should be taken when handling them. These…early issues were edited by Ralph Hill. This is Issue 2, released in May, 1947. There is a nice selection of contemporary halftone, black-and-white photographs arranged in two discrete section. The first photo section is a pictorial essay on opera, theatre and classical orchestras, as well as a few pictures of celebrities. Featured in the first photo portfolio are Britten's "The Rape of Lucretia" (Nancy Evans, Lesley Duff, Catherine Lawson, Peter Pears, Joan Cross, Frederick Sharp, Otakar Kraus, Owen Brannigan). Secondly Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" (Featuring Mariano Stabile, Alda Noni, Andrew MacPherson, Martin Lawrence). Thirdly is "La Boheme" by Puccini (Featuring Tony Sympson, Dorothy Vernon, Daria Bayan, Lester Ferguson). Other photographs show Margherita Carosio, Luigi Infantino, Onelia Fineschi, Constant Lambert (at the zoo), Vaughan Williams (conducting), and studio portraits of William Primrose and Josephine Strey. The second photo section is given over to ballet and theatre dance, as well as a healthy section of photos depicting the process of televising ballet. In December 1946 Penguin Books issued this Premier Issue of the "Penguin Music Magazine, a paperback-sized periodical with a healthy selection of articles and pictures about things musical, including operas, ballet, theater and classical composing. This first issue was edited by Ral…ph Hill. There is a nice selection of contemporary halftone, black-and-white photographs arranged in a discrete section. This is that scarce First Issue. Number 1. It's a paperback format publication from immediately post-war England in 1946, when paper shortages and restrictions still held sway (1946). The toning of the paper testifies to that . and because of that, such publications are often fragile, and proper care should be taken when handling them. CONDITION GOOD PLUS -- Clean and serviceable with the following noted: EXTERIOR : Moderate surface rub - a touch of scuff on rear, as well as some shallow surface creasing. spine is darkened. BINDING : Solid as can be expected - no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : The paper is unavoidably toned (to be expected from immediate post war production); an impact has caused some top corner tip creasing and a bit of loss near the end of the book. Basically the interior is clean and presentable, toning considered. A neatly inked date is written in small script on the first page (April 30, 1947).
