Añadir al carritoBlue Boards. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. A very satisfactory assemblage of the writings and speeches of a remarkable lawyer and citizen. Joseph Choate (1832-1917), was a founder of the New York Bar Association, President of the Constitutional Convention of 1894, Ambassador to Great Britain (1899-1905), head of the Delegation to the Second Hague Conference ("Law of the Sea") - but, above all, a member of the legal profession, of which he said, "I maintain that in no other occupation to which men can devote their lives is there a nobler intellectual pursuit or higher moral standard than that which inspires and pervades the ranks of the legal profession. To establish justice, to maintain the rights of man, to defend the helpless and oppressed, to succor innocence, and to punish guilt, to aid in the solution of those great questions legal and constitutional which are constantly being evolved from the ever varying affairs and business of men are duties that may well challenge the best powers of man's intellect and the noblest qualities of the human heart." The editor has organized the material into six sections: Addresses about Lawyers (Richard Henry Dana, among others); Forensic Speeches and Arguments (Massachusetts Fisheries Case, among others); Addresses on International Affairs (Addresses at the Second Hague Conference, among others); Political Speeches (Tamany Rule, among others); Addresses on Occasions (Women in Medicine, among others); and After-Dinner Speeches (Justice Hughes and the Supreme Court, among others). 1183 pages, with Memorial by Elihu Root, Introduction (to Forensic Speeches) by William V. Rowe, 4 phtographic plates, and Index; plus Table of Contents and Preface. Covers are nipped at four leading corners, worn at upper backstrap, and puckering at rear; rfEP is name-clipped and shows erasure; text is strong and clean though browning at edges.
